Saw him live with his MC on the gigantic open air stage @ creamfields prague and i was pretty impressed! Great atmosphere and basslines that "were so deep you could hear them in Jamaica" :haha: |

intelligent drum n bass is basically what i call house-y drum n bass, cos it uses more of a melody etc with sounds that are from real instruments (violins, brass etc) just like house music.
a good compilation is Drum and Bass Reborn, which was given out by mixmag some time ago

phorte's right, anything on the glo label is pure, undiluted, quality.
what do i think intelligent dnb is? its mostly atmospheric, and is music that will put you into a really deep mode of thought. there isnt any other genre that can do it, not even 'deep' 'progressive'. i think its a mixture of the really high temp beats that can make a track seem to race, yet the melodics can at the same time be very soft and dreamy.
also, if you've listened to conrad, esp some studio mixes, the vocal content is really thought provoking. not to mention his delivery is superb!
so essentially for me, intelligent dnb has nothing to do with a specific characteristic of a track, there just seems to be this broad range of tracks that can put u into a deep thought state.
check out progression sessions 1-5 (6 and onwards became live mixes and so they're more 'body movin' rather than 'thought groovin' ;) |

kosheen is quite a bad (imo) representation of d&b and i found decoder (and substance) made better tracks PRE-kosheen.
but i agree with everything sifntj0r has said. :D |

| i cannot really stand the fast DnB stuff, but recently staarted to love the jazzy stuff. It does what trance does a lot of the time by giving you that emotional feeling. Real chill |

Inteligent D&B came about from the UK Jungle scene...and developed its maturity around 95. where jungle had fast, aggressive amen breakbeats and ragga vocals, Intelignt D&B focused more on softer breaks, and mellow backdrops. some tunes from this peiod i would class as Trancy D&B (eg PFM - Wash Over Me).
LTJ Bukem was producing mellow rave & hardcore tunes from as far back as 1990. his biggest hit was a tune called 'Demons Theme', a very atmospheric and calm breakbeat tune from 91. but he really made it big with his label GLR in 1995 where he pioneered the up and coming 'Intelligent' scene.
