UK garage has found its level.. Back undergound where those who like it can stand around looking moody and MC's can have their 5 minutes of "fame". The rest of us can continue with our lives without having it rammed down our ears. This is a very healthy state of affairs.
The fact that the same tired old tunes from 4 years ago (KC & Jo Jo, Kele La Roc, Joy, SFA,Sparks & Kie and even the tiresome 138 trek) are still being played shows how stale the scene is. As somebody who used to play at some of the biggest "UK Garage" nights and worked with the likes of "So solid crew" and most of the MC's, I feel qualified to comment!
I too was a victim of the fashion but earned a good living at it! have now moved on to soulful funky house and US Garage. this music has musical content and substance, with people who can realy sing.. as opposed to shouting out "REEspec to the crew and all da lay-dees blah, blah,..BIG UP... 'OLD TIGHT.. and INSIDE!"
Most of the people who were "into" UK Garage have now latched onto "R&B".. because they are mostly followers of whatever trend is deemed to be fashionable. Most of them coudn't tell you what the "R" and the "B" stand for.. all they know is J lo, Black Eyed Peas,50 Cent, Christina Aguilera (R&B?) and whatever cable TV is showing. When they were into UK Garage, their favourite tunes would have been "Casualty" and "I don't smoke the reefa".. probably two of the worst records to come out of the whole era!
As a general comment, I think the whole music scene has become too fragmented with fractions of people being "into" a particular style to the exclusion af all others. Now THAT is NOT healthy! There are great house records, great trance records, R&B records and even some respectable, well produced drum & bass. So let's take the blinkers off our ears and start to appreciate them. |

| I liked the early NYC garage (mid 70's to late 80's), that was the best, none of this oversaturated violence driven UK scene where they lost ideas. |

Tim Westwood is a white man, aged about 45. He grew up in some market town in the middle of the English countryside, went to a private school and his father was a senior bishop. Yet he talks like he is right out of some American ghetto. Urban music is a parody of itself... the vast majority of it is pathetic ffs.

I know Tim quite well, although I have not spoken to him for a year or so. In his defence, you do not have to be a gangster from the ghetto to have an enthusiasm for rap. Westwood is a very well educated man who has a passionate knowledge of rap music. I do not particularly like his presentation style either, but could he present a rap show in the style of Bruno Brooks or Chris Moyles? Somehow I don't think that would work!
Perhaps you prefer the arrogant, but "smooth" style of Trevor Nelson? There is a man who embarassed himself by declaring in a TV documetary that the UK soul music & R&B scene started in London with "Soul to Soul"! I think some people in Wigan may have a different viewpoint! At least Westwood knows his stuff. |

No, it's early house music (house came from Chicago and US Garage from NYC; Chicago being funkier and NYC being more soulful).
Go to allmusic.com and search for garage, they've got some nice recomendations ;) |

| I own the vocal fusion albums, volumes 1, 2 and 3. A bit of UK Garage and even a touch of Speed Garage is included. They are fantastic. |
