heh..on a more serious... alightly insensitive but purely scientific note... technology has made us all have a better chance of living so natural selection cant really...select humans anymore since those who cant breed still find a way and those who are born with mutations that would be detrimental to survival still survive. those who are prone to get sick will always have medicine. with pills, antibiotics, antibacterial soap etc... we become more and more dependent on technology as many have said before and less able to fend for ourselves in nature.
im not saying that anything is right or wrong but i have been thinking about this for a while and the only thing i have come up with is that i think its just a cycle... enviornment effects our social values which effect the way we treat eachother and what we find necessary to invent which then effects out environment again. i think that is the essence of our evolution now... it seems to me that everything is dependent on ourselves and less dependent on the natural environment that surrounds us |

1) Our fingers and toes would be ugly as hell
2) They would become smushed after the years, as they are body extremeties which are constantly put in stressful situations.
3) Also, don't forget gripping, etc. in certain situations. |
painting my nails in bright colors and sticking little stars on them, i love doing that, haha :haha: |

I don't think 'prettiness' is so much a genetic or evolutionary thing. I mean obviously it comes from genes, but just because a gorgeos girl and hot guy make babies, doesn't mean those babies will look good too. If you put pizza and beer into a blender you'll probably end up with crap, no matter how good they taste on their own. |
** trancEaddict.com in no way suggests putting live humans into blenders. ** |

i had a friend a few years back that had six toes (well, more like 5 1/2, but it was trippy as !)
i dunno why, but that doesnt sound right... |

Erm, you're thinking of the big toe!
Anywayz, I think the way forward is to surgically 'upgrade' humans with electronic components like eyes and stuff, so we can see in the dark, or see the infra-red spectrum. I personally would love to have hearing outside the range of normal humans. That'd be wierd.

Bah human vanity! Do we dare to suppose that we have "halted" evolution or that we have "conquered" nature? That's preposterous.
Evolution is still working on us, in full force -- the only thing that is different now is that there are different factors involved (sitting in front of computers, McDonald's, etc.) -- it's not that somehow, since we have become "technologically advanced", we are magically exempt from the laws of nature.
Humans *are* part of nature, it is totally stupid to think that we can go beyond it... how can we go beyond what we truly are, the basic nature of our being?
As for modifying ourselves, I think that is a HUGE no-no. Not because of any "religious beliefs" or anything silly like that, but because it is a recipe for disaster. Again, how can we dare to suppose that we can be "better" at nature for creating or modifying life? It's easy to say on paper, "let's build a human with two hearts," and in our absolutely laughable ignorance we would think that's all there is to it -- but there are so many different factors involved, so many complications, energy patterns in our bodies, interralated systems -- putting another heart in there would be disastrous. That human would never survive long.
The solution is not to modify ourselves -- why do people think that there is something "wrong" with our bodies? Why the urge to modify them? People have to rather understand themselves, and they would then see that such thinking is unnecessary...
If genetic modification was allowed, and humans were changed drastically all over the world (it all starts slowly, removing certain genetic tendencies for certain diseases, but then always gets bigger and bigger), there will be more deformities, more dangerous and numerous illnesses, etc. Why? Because we would have introduced so many factors that would have upset the balance of our internal chemistries. I wouldn't be surprised if we became collectively extinct due to it.
So instead of worrying about living under water on Triton (which is a moon of Saturn actually -- I don't think any moon of Jupiter's has water or even ice), we should be worrying about living now. |
Maybe I should correct myself on the first point. I don't think we've stopped evolution, intentionally or otherwise, I think that evolution is still going on, but the development of technology and the change in lifestyle has a great effect on it. For example, modern people don't have to be nowhere near as good runners as our ancestors were. Therefore, evolution will no longer favor good runners. Also, the development of contraception ensured that most people would have about equal number of children, regardless of their evolutionary advantages.
Now about modifying ourself, I must disagree with you here. Of course having 2 hearts or some other great modification to the human body are at the moment both silly and dangerous. However, I see nothing wrong in removing inherent diseases from the general population. Why let nature take its course and have people suffer, when there's a ready and quick solution that could help both them and their offspring. The human race has always been exemplary in a way it was the only species that changed the environment to suit its purposes, instead of letting evolution take its course. We have already disrupted evolution in great many ways. We get rid of plagues not by waiting for the few to develop resistance, but by inventing new medicines. In the end, such an endavour only causes the general population to become less adapted and more vulnerable, as those with a defective immune system will be able to procreate later on in life. We simply can't go on like that forever, or in the end human immune system will be drastically weakened. Same goes for all the other aspects of life. It is no longer necessary for a person to be in a good physical shape. That means mildly physically defective people will have the same amount of offspring as strong and healthy ones. Now, if we take into consideration the fact that very few genetic mutations are beneficial, and that most of them are harmful, that only means humans will deter from their evolutionary peak into a bunch of weak, defective and unhelthy imbeciles. So, since we already have disrupted the natural flow of evolution, there are 3 alternatives. Either we go back to the caveman style of living, either we forcefully remove the bad seeds from the society and force the good ones to have more children, or we use genetic therapy to modify and correct errors. In my opinion, the third solution is the most desireable one. |

Aside from the fact that some people don't seem to understand what evolution is at all, I think people are forgetting about the most important element of natural selection, which is - the SELECTOR!
Just because it would be nice to see infrared or have less hair or bigger ears or whatever doesn't mean it's going to happen. Evolution isn't just about convenience; in order for a race to evolve, the "unevolved" members of the race have to actually be killed off or at least fail to procreate.
That being said, a person can have a weak heart and develop heart disease but have kids before then. Or some smooth-talking dumbass hick can go around impregnating dozens of women (we see this on Montel all the time!). And it goes both ways too, there are women who don't even know who the frickin' fathers of their children are, and we almost invariably find out that both the mother and father are fat, ugly, stupid, and probably immediate family so their kids end up being deformed to .
So um, yeah, anyway, evolution's not going to happen for us any time soon! |

ahh...no...you quite mistaken... unless you want everyone to be brown eyed and black haired because those are the dominant alleles in our genes. Other natural eye colors such as blue, green, hazel, & violet and combinations in between are quickly fading away. Blonde hair will only be seen in bleaching and eye colors will be changed using contacts... in the near future anyways. |

absolutely right, i was about to post that.
Also, due to the blending of people at world wide level, more people will have darker skin.
also about "pretiness" being transfered... "pretiness" is something that can change in a matter of a generation. Hairy guys were the thing of the 70's, now its the contrary. Fat women were the most beautiful things at the beginning of the 20th century. In some countries, small breast size is seen as sexier than over here in north america for example... in some countries a girl with large hips is sexy, whereas girls with no hips (in north america) is sexier.
anyways, you get the point :P |
