on a serious note, this debate is inevitable. although i dare say that both have their redeeming qualities, in my personal view, trance is just more versatile. it accomodates a whole spectrum of tastes and i find it is much more easier to just let soak in and absorb if you will. progressive is much more refined and is such an acquired taste that it's sometimes hard to just "enjoy" as you would listening to trance.
what that means is... i like my cheese, what can i say? :p ;) |

Jizza makes a good point... in that progressive is more of an aquired taste. Hence the common idea among prog-elitists that they have 'matured' away from trance and into prog-trance. Escee also makes a good point, trance was so good... but it seems like it's lost it's sense of direction lately (for the mostpart)... I have faith that it still be around for a long time though, please don't say it won't be back Jace :(

| I dont think the trance of those years will be back. Im not saying everything released in 99-01 was amazing stuff either, there was plenty of . But the good stuff was absolutely classic. So much so it raised the bar for the quality of trance, and that bar hasnt been touched by anything released recently. |

but don't you think the only reason they're deemed classics now is that they were ground-breaking stuff that no-one had heard or experienced before. nowadays you can have just as earth-shattering productions but people tend to always compare them to a bygone era that was safe to say, the glory days. which isn't really fair, it's like comparing the current line of Wella styling cremes (which are competent) to the formidable juggernaut that was brylcreem (THE benchmark of hair products)... or something like that. :) |

I dont think there has been anything released this year that people will remember 2 years from now. There just isnt that quality that makes your remember a tune.

99 trance was some ground-breaking stuff, but the constant comparison to the era i think indicates the lack of evolution in the trance genre? it's not that the stuff is i dont think. its because most adopt a similar structure, similar synths, similar style etc. take into account many of us were first exposed to 99 trance, hence our ever-lasting love affair with what was at that time. that's the thing with prog. you never read threads regardin an era for prog to have been elite over another time because its constantly moving and changing. while it may be an acquired taste, i think such is a quality that never allows u to bore of the genre.
tho a bit of a paradox [take into account i havnt listened to much trance in the last 3 months or so], i notice much fusion occurin in trance. the stuff markus schulz is churnin out, what avb's playin, and prime e.g. gnd's - ATRC. much of it i definitely would not consider prog, nor is it strictly trance, but yet adopts the appeal [the commercial, slightly cheesy one =p] trance has. that's where trance is headin i'd say. |
