Err.. I didnt think this thread would go so far - passions do run high in football I guess...
Anyways, as far as Fifa 2004 is concerned, I tried the demo quickly on a friend's computer and as usual all candy nice graphics and presentations and what not but it lacked the substance... will write a full review when i sort out my own computer and play it some more... Fifa has always lacked that something extra and unless you have a football mind and live and breathe the sport you wont understand what im talking about... Fifa 2004 is EA's most decent effort yet but I gave up on them with Fifa 99 so no credit to them for taking so long...
A good example of what I mean is when in PES if your are down by one goal in stoppage time and you win a corner your goalie comes up to go all out for the draw... I cant help but smile when I see brilliant strokes of genius like that from the programmers... EA on the other hand will wait for Konami to come up with something new so they can put it in as "evolutionary" in their next game. 1-2s, through balls, shot power bars, different set piece animations, on the fly strategies, left-right footedness (I could take perfect free kicks with Beckham's left foot as recently as Fifa 2002 - can you imagine?)... Immitation is the ultimate form of flattery in my opinion...
While I eagerly anticipate PES 3's release on the PC finally (November is it?) I am sort of glad that EA continues to release their Fifa series. Not because I will buy it but I think it keeps competition healthy and us customers will ultimately benefit from constant upgrades etc...
One more thing, and how many people can you boast converting to Fifa from PES? Try none. On the other hand, everyone I have introduced PES to have never looked back... and they shouldn't.
point given, case closed. |

raz, kudos to you. your post has probably been the first one to constructively give HIS reasons as to why one is better than the other. bravo.
the subjective word in that paragraph is "constructively" :) |

I used to play PES, and I played the PES 3 demo but after getting the Fifa 2004 I couldnt believe I wasted my time on PES, Fifa 2004 is alot better game in every aspect, gameplay wise and AI wise.
I know TONS of people from "soccergames" forum who went from PES to Fifa 2004 simple because its alot more realistic, and the AI are top notch. |

Linx thanks for the comments... just trying to inject some reason into this thread...
ThaDevil: I think whats annoying alot of pes players on this forum is how you refer to PES as "wasting your time". As opposed to what exactly? playing Fifa98, 99, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003? I get the feeling you are just trying to justify being suckered into paying for 10 useless games. Cognitive dissonance I think it is called. Then again I was never into psychology. Your arguments for Fifa 2004 are very thinly veiled and too easy. Better graphics? Fifa 2003 had superior graphics to PES, we all know that game sucked the big one. "Real Names, Real Leagues"? Well EA had that in Fifa 2002 which has to be one of the worst sports games I have ever played. Not to mention, it took EA forever to realize that Roberto Carlos is not the same height as T. Andre Flo. And that Paul Scholes does not take penalties with his left foot. The list is endless and I can't really be bothered.
Bottom line - Konami deserves much more respect than you can offer for giving true fans of football an alternative to EA's orgy of indecency. I know of people who have bought PS2 just so that they can play the game. I, for one, dont have time to play video games anymore but whenever I do occasionaly have a joypad in my hands its always when imported Japanese commentary is bursting out of my TV as I lived in "soccer" deprived North America.
I wouldnt normally care about a video game but PES (aka ISS, aka WE) has given me (and countless others) too many joys for me to dismiss. Don't forget your magic mushrooms - you might just need them to tolerate Electronic Arts' latest excuse for a football game. |

All the previous Fifas 94-2003 were HORRIBLE games, and I hated EA for that, thats why I used to play PES, but EA got Fifa 2004 right on the money, previously PES would be ALOT better then ANY FIfas, but Fifa 2004 tops PES in every single way possible, no more you/I can win 6-0, 8-2 against pro/world class AI, now its soo much more realistic, last night I played Juve (me) vs Milan on pro level and I barley won 3-2 at the 89th minute but a corner header, it was an amazing feeling, the game as soo intense, so many posts so many freekicks I felt like I was IN the game, it was so intense.
I just cant wait for the final game.
But anyways, whoever likes PES good for them, whoever likes Fifa 2004 good for them, it just a matter of prefrence.
Nevertheless I will download PES 3 for PC just to see if it can actually impress me (which I doubt after playing Fifa2004).
BTW, what the hell do magic mushrooms have to do with this ? weirdo  |

The demo for the PC version is not out yet - to the best of my knowledge. If you live in Europe you can get your hands on the PS2 demos from stores and various magazines. The game is already released on the PS2 and will come out on the PC end of November.
North American PS2 players will have to wait for Jan-Feb i think for the game... not exactly sure
Yes Ive played Virtua striker on dreamcast. Horrible Horrible. That was not Konami it was Sega. All Virtua series are by Sega. Anyways, no it has nothing to do with PES. To get an idea you can rent out Winning Eleven Iternational for the PS2. Its the north American version, not sure if it is available in Blockbusters though. Last time I checked they had lots of copies in Future Shop. I'm not sure whether its the equivalent of PES 1 or 2. Both of them were quality games anyhow. |

ThaDevil:
Just go get a copy of winning 11 ver 7 and play it on ps2 then go play fifa 2004 and u'll see the difference in game play (in terms of realism), which ofcourse WE ver7 is much better imo and many others opinion as well (not necessary urs). But then again even though it's u that decided to switch over to fifa doesn't mean others should turn to fifa 2004 as well. As I read above u argued that Fifa 2004 is much more realistic because u can't win with 7-0 scores at hard diffculity anymore. If u turn around and look at WE, ask youself when could u win 7-0 against AI when u set the difficulty to 4 stars or 5stars? Also u've said that WE ver 7 (PES 3) looks like a cartoon arcade style soccer game, but I've yet to see the amount of variations in in game strategies to formations adjustments to be present in any soccer game up to date (including fifa 2004). But since fifa 2004 is still a demo I agree that I can't make my final judgement on which is better rite now (for now I would pick WE ver7). Also I do feel that some of ur pro fifa 2004 arguments also applies to WE ver7 (graphics and the amount of teams as an exclusion). For example, u stated that the game play feels real because u've won a game during the last seconds of the match and the scores are very close. The same scenario can happen in WE series. Another thing is that u mentioned that EA invited soccer stars to their studio inorder to do motion capture to bump up the realism in the game. But as far as I know, EA did the same things to their past fifa series (which sucked alot). Finally, ur repetitive statements such as "WE ver7 is for n00bs", "WE ver 7 is just a cartoon like arcade style soccer game", "playing WE ver7 is just wasting time" have contributed to most of ur replies in this thread. And worst, u've decided to insult other people just because they dont' have the same opinion as u do. Not that u might be the only one insultin others in this thread. So if u like fifa 2004 more than PES3/WE ver 7 then so be it, no need to diss others or the other game simply cuz u don't think it's for u. |
