Yah Sean is right with that one.
Generally the rule of thumb with melodies is, after 8 repetitions, it starts to boor the listener. So your climax and such will depend on the length of your riff. I wouldnt go much past 8 bars.

And personally i think the days of long builds are over. More and more you hear more intelligent ways to bring in the lead. It use to be just kill the bass and percs for a while, do a long ass snare roll with lots of crashes.

It's all about variety when it comes to building up your song... if every tune you make has the same general form, they will have a feel of "sameness" even if everything else is different. But when it comes down to it, there is a lot of sameness going around. I'd say for melodic trance or more progressive songs your 3/.5/1.5/1.5 works but for hard trance or more dance-floor oriented tunes you should waste no time getting to the lead. Or just be like Ferry Corsten and don't even bother with any sort of buildup.

Anyone knows how to create the synth Mauro Picotto uses in New Time, New Place? Here's a sample:

Sample

I know how to create the warble sound in the synth, but mine just sounds so thin and normal. Any help is appreciated.

ps: great tune this is!!!

I've been obsessed with that track recently and was going to be trying to re-create that synth. I'll let you know if I have any luck, hehe.

Try a detuned saw thru a lp-filter (max freq. a tad res.) and crank up portamento. Might want to add a bit treble with eq.

I think it also has a very high rate vibrato, altho with a subtle amount of pitch.

What software are you using ?
I can post a Reason file if anyone want.

Cheers.

I would like to have the Reason file also :p :p :p THanX mate :toothless

PM Mr. Mystery (who also mixed the thing) and/or MaRt, as they are the two people behind Al Azar.

This is a sample of a 10 mins. effort at the Ferry Corsten - Punk sound.

Have a listen, and if you like it, ill upload the Reason file. But i already described how i got to this sound. Maybe its way of, its done via a pair of e speakers.
Btw, i dont remember who did the midifile.
