What is the oldest tiesto mix you've listened to? He's been around a loooong time. Go way back and you'll find a lot of music that errs on the side of techno rather than trance.
Regardless, listen to his live @ la rocca set, plus any of his recent sets which have often included tracks like Gatex and Vitalic's "la rock." (100% a techno track.) The guy has obvious respect for genres other than trance, such as techno, progressive, and I even heard him drop Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" into a set. |

| Hey I never said i don't like techno...i'm just saying that Tiesto was never a techno DJ. :D His style in general does get kidna hard sometimes...lethal industry...flight 643...trafic arent your typical trance melodies. But that doesnt make him a techno dj. Besides last time i checked this is still TRANCE-addict...so why you come here wiht "i love techno" shirt to cause trouble hehe :toothless: Allright so lets keep this relevant. Tiesto was never a techno dj i was his fan before he became as huge as he is now :). |

| Tiesto played a lot of techno at one point. Check out his Space Age 1 compilation. Not one trance tune on that CD. I even heard that he wanted to spin at some techno event recently(Awakenings or something like that), but didn't get the gig. |

Tiesto has ALWAYS been "trancey", even before Trance was a bona fide genre. He used to play house music at the Spock since 85' and has actually produced some techno and hardcore tracks. But he was NEVER strictly a techno Dj. You talk about going back to his early career....um, well, his first release was in 95...Forbidden Paradise 3 (he also did, 4, 5, 6, 7 before starting the Magiks and ISOS)....FP is HARD TRANCE with some early TRANCE tracks. He did do the space age cd's, but they aren't very good anyway. Tiesto's best is in trance and he knows it.
Anyway, I just don't like Umek (not to say I don't like ALL techno, though I don't know much), but this is tranceaddict...right? |

Thank you!
We can argue about genres til the end of time. hard trance, techno, electro, boogey-boogey, who cares...but Tiesto has and does still play techno. Smitty, he is more accepting of other genres than you appear to be, and hence why I brought him up in this thread. I know how much you like him as a DJ.
You can claim he was never a techno DJ, but you say that based on what? Your definition of a genre you don't even listen to?
How can you even say his space age CDs aren't very good anyways - you probably think that because they are techno.
Anywhoo, as for this being tranceaddict...is tranceaddict supposed to be strictly limited to trance? Are the members therefore supposed to limit their discussion of other genres? I don't think so. Until I STOP seeing "tranceaddicts" posting in techno threads, coming to techno events and supporting tranceaddict techno DJs (ahem ;) ) I am not going to refrain from discussing techno on this board. Certainly not in this thread, anyways - it's about UMEK, remember? |

I listen to a lot of other genres including house, dark progressive house as well as trance. But I'm not limited to EDM...I also like classical music (I own Beethoven's Symphonies for example)...I love 80's music, I love classic Rock...hell, I even like a bit of disco.
I don't like rap or hip hop, save a few songs from the 90's.
As for techno...I admit I don't know much about it. I downloaded the Space Age Cd's awhile ago and didn't like them. I was not saying I don't like techno as a genre...I was just saying I don't like Umek at all, since I HAVE heard his stuff. Does he represent all techno? Nope. I've heard some crazy techno thrown down by Mark Oliver in the Guv a few times which I really enjoyed, but had no idea what it was. If Mauro Picotto counts as techno...well I like him too, but I have to be in a certain mood for it.
And about tranceaddict...no, it doesn't have to be just about trance. But, as I've said before, the main focus and attraction here are trance events and trance Dj's....and when people start bashing the out of Dj Tiesto and others while at the same time bash the trance genre....it gets annoying. |

Understandably.
I just don't see that happening in this thread (about UMEK). Actually, I was giving kudos to Tiesto for being a multi-genre, open minded DJ.
This whole thing got started because you said Umek's productions suck. Who is bashing who, here? |

yeah, I'm bashing Umek because I don't like him. But then you turned it into a "smitty hates techno" thread, which isn't true. I just loathe Umek. |

Don't get me wrong, he knows his ...but come on. He's a bit over rated i think. Sure tiesto may be the head of his domain when it comes to trance, but not electronic music in general. Theres no way one man ( tiesto ) can be number 1 in every genre of trance music. So trance whys, sure, to me he one of the best. Not a huge fan of his productions, yet very talented, his live sets are beautifully crafted. Techno has been bashed over and over as " the music that goes boom boom boom boom boom boom boom, u get the picture. But as for a techno head, someone like Picotto is just as superior to the electronic music industry as much as Tiesto. So in other words, Mauro Picotto is my Tiesto.

My apologies if I misinterpreted the statement "I do not like that style of music" to be "I do not like techno."
To each their own, anyways...but as I asked earlier, how many of that giant list of Umek's productions have you actually listened to?
Gatex is not even representative of his general studio style, I would say. |
