yeah but compare a mp3 at 192 to a cd/vinyl on medium to high spec audio setup and you can notice the difference |

Excuse me... Vinyl? You just defeated your argument right there. Vinyl is great, don't get me wrong, but in terms of reproducing the original sound, it's nowhere CLOSE to CD or MP3 quality. It has TONS of artifacts, hiss and clicks and pops and everything. An MP3 encoded at 192 kbps is worlds better than any vinyl at capturing what was actually recorded. The reason vinyl is so good is *because* of those artifacts, it's that "warm" sound - it's the same reason why people like tubes better than solid state despite the greater nonlinear distortion.
Between MP3s and CDs though, there really is no difference if they've been ripped and encoded properly. Paul Van Dyk did at least half of his set here last week on Final Scratch, and let me tell you, nobody noticed any difference in sound quality. And I don't think a sound system gets any more "high spec" than the Phazon sound system at the Guvernment/KH. |
