So...someone said a few years back, that trance is dead...:crazy: :haha: I am assuming all we need to do is look at the results of the top 100 list this year to realize nothing could be further from the truth.:stongue: Tranceaddicts forever...TIESTO TIESTO TIESTO :D .

Trance isn't dead, it's still dying.
Notice how the NUMBER of purely trance DJs are decreasing on the poll? and how purely techno/house/prog DJs are making more of an appearance on the list?
I thought so. |

Im not a huge fan of trance, but personally I think trance is still king on a global scale....
locally, it's popularity has been hurting for quite a while....but around the globe, it's still king... |

i meant it as a question...as in "where did you get the impression that people thought that trance was dead/dying?"....i've never been under that impression, despite the fact that im not a huge fan of it (though i've been witness to some great sets by tiesto)...
there was actually a good article about the state of trance in dj mag earlier this year....cant remember when it was or even if they archive stuff on their website, but it was definitely worth a read |

By dying, I mean it's decreasing in popularity relative to other genres.

IN MY OPINION....
I take a very post-modernistic approach to this question, and on that note, trance is very much dead. (in the sense that it's still here, but we've seen it come and go as a movement)
I also see parallels between trance (now) and rock (in the 70's). You know the 'Almost Famous' quote: "Rock, it's over, you're here for the final 'death rattle'"
NOTE: This does NOT mean I don't love trance. Because I do. I just think we've seen the peak of trance (back in 98, 99, 00), and thus are only witnessing the stragglers pack up and leave.
As of late I've also seen "progressive" or "house" really penetrate the mainstream in a weird way. The fact that it's slowed down and that production has become much much more in dept is creating a huge upsurge in who's listening to it.
I think it's really tough to gauge, because we are in the INSIDE looking OUT. I haven't been out of the scene to see what people are saying about it. |
