Just got into an argument with my parents...I had made a fire in the fireplace and was listening to a lil trance and readin a book. Very pleasant cuz its pouring like hell outside. My dad comes in and the first thing out of his mouth is "Are you listening to TECHNO again?" emphasis with disdain on the techno. I explain that if hes going to generalize it call it electronica.
and he says something that makes me respond "If you think that if this music takes any less talent than other forms of music, you are a fool" and he says that musicians have WAYYY more talent and that these DJs are just "technicians"
SO i respond with a "well...technically all musicians are musical technicians. Instead of using the old technology of wood and string, they use circuit boards and vinyls, just a more recent instrument"
I continue to say that his belief that musicians who play intruments have some indefinable sould or spirit in them that Electronic artsists dont really pisses me off, and that thinking that something made from nature EG wood and gut would have more soul in it than a "cold electronic circuit board" seems pretty ing pagan and lacking in good sense to me. (pissed him off cuz hes a Christian missionary and i called him a pagan).
It seems to me that people have a problem with electronica because they think it lacks "soul" (whatever the hell that means in a musical conotation I dont know) or emotion. They seem to have this troglodytic (A member of a fabulous or prehistoric race of people that lived in caves, dens, or holes.
A person considered to be reclusive, reactionary, out of date, or brutish.) outlook that new things are bad and cant be as good as the "old days". Sorry, but Gielen aint gonna sound like the Beatles, but they are still gonna pour their talent into a crowd of thousands.
I m pissed right now. I walked out with a parting "Its pretty ed up to say that one form of music is less valid than another" and walked out...sigh. Dont with my music when im listening to it and enjoying myself. The bastard ruined my afternoon. |

Seriousy I never got this argument about one instrument being more natural than the other and hence including "soul". A violin is as unnatural as is a synthisizer. |

i think its funny when people say that Electronica isnt really music because its all machines and anyone can really do it
Then you bring up the electric guitar, which is, in essence, the same thing.

| You had a lot of good defenses there. It's not often parents actually understand their kids music, just a fact of life. It sucks though when they sit there and rip on it. It wouldn't surprise me if your dad went through the same thing with his parents. |

I don't give a how the music is made, I just want the music to touch me, and inspire me.
Music has inspired me my whole life in many different forms, Rock, Electronic, Classical, Hip Hop, and much much more...
just listen. |

yeah I brought up the guitar asking if it was just as much technicality saying 'first finger, 3rd fret' on a guitar and how I can play the exact same songs that Eric Clapton wrote about his child that died falling from a balcony and smile while he cries. The song itself is something you could punch holes in and feed to a computer...what the hell does he think MP3s are!@!!!!W@#@!#!@ Moron! |

I know what you mean though. I can't stand it when people refer to it as "That techno ", it drives me nuts! I flame whenever I get the chance. I remind them that most of the time those "hot" band and "pop" stars that they listen to have electronic music in the backround, and every type of music essentially comes from a beat, and that "TECHNO" as they like to call it, has one!
FFS! on that crap!
On a better note, I got my roommate to slowly transform into liking trance:D |

i had a chat with my mum about the history of house music, at the pub a few weeks ago... the result.. im going to a northern soul night with her sumtime soon.
my dad likes happy hardcore and hardstyle... so i never had a disagreement with my parents about such an issue, but its annoying as hell when ppl cant see and understand whats being told to them |

A quote that's actually from me that's made a lot of my friends stop and think:
To take music and play it like a machine... that's easy. But to take a machine and play it like music... that takes talent.
I played the piano since I was 6, I was a child prodigy. Won all sorts of competitions and stuff. I still have the greatest respect for the DJs and producers - at least, the good ones, those who have a real feel for the music and don't just beat match.
Go to any junior music competition and you'll see hundreds of kids playing soulless, boring music. But a lot of African music, for example, is also built on repetitive rhythms and motifs and the entire "flow" and "direction" of that music is based on how those rhythms change, very gradually. This was drum music, tribal, it was around long before the first wind or string instrument ever came to be. "Techno" is a modern form of the oldest music known to man. Trance and other kinds of electronica are its descendants.
People are stuck up about their music, it seems. They like to think that only their music was TRULY groundbreaking and original. But if they don't understand where music came from, they sure won't understand where it's going... |

I get pissed off when people say like that i actually want to keel them it makes me soo freakin mad and i cant control myself them ignorant bastards.
Oh and why do people always say like what kind of music you listen to and i say trance and they say whats that and i say its like techno or electronica so they know where im coming from and then they say what are you a fag??????? yeah, i wasnt so pissed that he doesnt like my music, i deal with that every day ("Turn that thumping off!") i was pissed because I was having an enjoyable stormy afternoon, reading a book that evoked old memories, just kind of a bittersweet melancholy mood today, and he ed it all up. Hmph. Im gonna go make some more tea, maybe take a nap. I dont know yet. |
