Can any advise me of some good tracks to listen to to get some ideas for trance percussion? |

I still dont get this concept of layering. Can anyone recommened some good sites / books to read up on it?
Also, what programs are you using for drums? I always found Reasons drum machine easy, but ReBirth has a lot more potential, if it wasn't hampered by the nasty inbuilt sequencer. |

layering is just a name for putting sounds on top of other sounds really |

If you do it correctly you don't need any clones or filtering. |

My version of trance percussions:
SINGLE BASSDRUM - hard compress and EQ (if needed) no reverb and delay)
SINGLE CLAP - :) overreverbed and EQ'ed (2003 was year of the clap)
SINGLE OPEN HIHAT - easy delay and reverb and EQ (if needed)
BONGO LOOP - medium (hard) delay and panning sync from left to right
HIHAT LOOP - easy delayed and playing in center
SOME RANDOM LOOP (FXed or electro style) - delayed and medium reverb
BTW: everything stop working If I bypass DELAY effect :) And you must sync your delay effect with track tempo! :) Nothing original but hope it help you!!

These are the percs from my latest tune, I think you can all agree that they're pretty full and busy sounding. The first 35 or so seconds is the track with nothing other than the beats and a couple effects, then afterwards starting at around 40seconds I solo the individual percussion tracks so you can see how they all come together.
Hope this helps. |

cheers sean.. your tutorials are always useful.. i think what most people just usually do is just say "add tons of layers of percussion" or "use delays and reverbs" but you went thru the liberty of actually breaking each layer into components and showing us how you arranged your percussion in different frequencies to make that full complex rich percussion...
good job m8 :) |
