I found this on my travels this morning:

cc-ccc-ccc-ccc-c closed hat
--o---o---o---o- open hat
----s-------s--- snare
k---k---k---k--- kick

Its a really good pattern for a basic drum loop.

That is actually the most basic pattern you can get.

It's good to use as the basis but very, very boring if you have nothing else going.

I had been struggling with drum patterns all morning and that helped loads, so hopefully it will save a lot of searching for another newb :)

Thanks for the hint Mr.Mystery. I'll have to give this a try on my next track I start on.

On my current track I just used a loop and chopped it to hell and back then applied some effects and eq.

dj-sean - can you give me any tips on how to create the nice fills (the effects) you have in the clip you posted?

The reverbed holden'esque clap type sound is a chopped up sample I got from one of the Dorumalaia sample packs, the whoosh can be created with Synth1, or pretty much any noise generator and careful EQ'ing. The other fill I have in there, that rising screech type sound was created by stretching the out of a standard 909 OH with slow attack.

64/1 =
1/64 part of a note
(=the number of squares in your step sequencer)
I hardly ever use it.. 32 is enough
