Yep.. i second the motion.. What a pretty sick night!

I couldn't believe how packed it was -- and at 35 bucks a pop System RAKED in the cash that night! Anyway, yeah. My first time hearing Richie Hawtin and man was it just wicked. And of course Deko-ze (as always) represents. (And yes, MattVagrant -- i thought of you when he dropped 'Scandal in New York' too. lol)

I didn't know what to expect that night but It was really cool seeing a bunch of TA's there! Jenna Rae and Mike -- Great to see you guys again!! Ben and Sue -- I hope your sister had a great time on her Birthday! Other shouts to Al, Julia, Patch, DallasStar, CrazedCanuck, Skipper (haven't met you yet but I happened to catch a few tracks of your set! Pretty sweet!), Your Mother (nice to meet you) and John (Ezekiel) -- dude we gotta work on our communication skills man :haha: ).

SO yeah! Too good! I will probably see you all at Shine 4 in a couple of weeks.

Later!

Ill start by explaining the beginning of one of the longest days of my life. Woke up at 7:30am. In the shower i all of the sudden remember my dream from that night where i ran out of gas on my way to work. With this in the back of my head as i get into my car, i notice im at a quarter tank, and think to myself "ok, i think im good at least until the Esso off the highway". So im on the road, approach the Esso and notice the pumps are completely taped off and not open for business. I was running a little bit behind, plus i had to pick up my District Managers Assistant so i figure i wont risk being any more late....im just going to head to Burlington. Halfway there....take a guess what happens. Thats right folks, Jeffrey runs out of gas for the second time in less than a month. So i call my brother (who was also on his way to work) to bring me some gas. He arrives with the gas, i put the gas in my tank....nothing happens. So we sit there (in my brothers car) and wait for CAA to arrive which they say could be up to an hour. An hour passes, the tow arrives. While we were waiting my brother had to piss so bad that he resorts to a "Dumb And Dumber" and proceeds to piss in a bottle. After filling the first, he does the pinch, and reaches to the back seat to eventually fill a second bottle. Just as he started up the second bottle the tow arrives and pulls up right behind his car, seeing all that was taking place in the car. Pretty funny . So i get a tow to the closest dealership, get the fuel guage fixed AGAIN and finally get into Burlington to pick up my DM's assistant at 11:45. I am now almost 3 hours late to open my store and i reeek of gas since i spilled it all over my gloves and leather coat. I work the rest of my shift which consisted of 4 hours, left to pick up my buddy in Mississauga, and head to the Raptors game. Raptors lose in OT, great game anyways, then i head to System. By now, im drunk off of the twelve dollar beers at the ACC and exhausted as well as sick with a sinus and now eye infection.

Now for my review @ System. LOL
Get there around 10:30 to a relatively small lineup. Tommy then arrives to meet me in line and we head in. Deko-ze started out his set VERY progressive, almost a little too slow for my liking. We went into the VIP to catch a bit of Sarahs set (i was VERY impressed by your mixing by the way). When we got back into the mainroom Deko-ze was starting to get in his groove and i found myself dancing like a maniac with whatever energy i had in me. He all of the sudden went from slow prog, to banging tech house without me even really noticing the progession. Very nice stuff, best track id have to say (not sure of the name) but its a Deep Dish regular with female vocals that repeat "I just cant help myself"....wicked WICKED buildup and i was flipping out!! Deko-ze wraps up his very versatile set, and on comes Mr. Hawtin.

I was expecting Richie to come out kinda slow to warm us up, and then eventually get into the bangers. I was completely off with my prediction. He ripped into us with insane bass oriented techno right off the bat, and continued to get better and better within the first two hours of his set. He then turned to his more experimental side for a small segment, and from the little crowd reaction he was getting it seemed he wanted to pull something from his arsenal to absolutely kill us. Murder Was The Bass was the start of a slaying that began around 4:30 or so and for about a half hour it was madness on the dancefloor. He tailed off into more minimal style til about 5:30 and by that time, i was completely spent. I really spent the last hour just taking in the music, and not dancing my ass off like i usually do. In coat check line it sounded like he was starting to get funky again, and i has second thoughts about hitting the dancefloor again, but my legs told me to off.

Overall a great night of music, way too many people for my liking, and WAY too hot. I really hope the renovations taking place at System will expand the room on the dancefloor and position speakers more spread out so you can hear the music well even behind the dj booth. Nice to see John (Thanks for the GL) Skipper, Dallas, tomEboy (Hope you had a good b-day), The Highroller, Jenna Rae and Schryer (sorry we didnt get to party longer), and Ryan Parks (nice meeting you bro!).

I wasn't impressed by his set, I mean it was OK but nothing too hard or dirty. Murder was the Bass was good but that's about it. And what's going on with the punk hairdo? Maybe he should focus more on his music and less on getting ginas. He was really rude to me too when I came up to talk to him. I'd seen him in the UK and talked to him and when I reminded him of that he was like "nope, sorry don't know you, gotta get back to this"
whatever floats your boat I guess but I'm not too happy about how I spent my 40 bucks.

wow...NO WAY! Any one of the Kool Haus sets from Ultra Spin 4 was better than Richie's set...granted, people have different tastes ;) I had a fun night though.

Mrs. Spice...I think the short (real) version of your review is that you're upset that he didn't remember you and you didn't care for his style...so you had a bad time. Seriously though...hostility lately...in Sarah's set thread it seemed kinda personal too...no?

my take on the night...I had fun, despite the night gettting off to a ty start...4 people didn't show up (they know who they are!) who I counted on to meet there since the usuals I go with weren't going that night...it also means I paid $30 to get in, since I didn't bother to email John for guestlist, since one of the 4 had already arranged it :(

no matter...5 minutes after getting inside, I met up with someone I've just met a few times and a couple his friends...went on to enjoy Deko-ze spin another kick ass bangin' set...he's about as reliable at System as Mark Oliver is at Guv...almost always "on".

Richie...hmmmm...I dunno, his set didn't blow me away at all. Don't get me wrong, I liked what he spun and had a very good night....but it's just not the same (for me) as hearing some wicked trance or prog, I guess. I enjoyed the darker portion of his set the most, but it dragged on far too long for me...I know he's touring for his Plastikman project, but I was still hoping for some harder stuff or for him to mix it up a bit more. Unfortunately, I was already in the coat check line to leave when he dropped Murder was the Bass...that picked it up a notch...but I still left because I was tired, too wrecked, and kind of getting bored, lol.

I didn't get to hear nearly as much of Sarah's set as I would have liked, because the others wanted to hit the main room...but I liked the 20-25 minutes of what I did hear :)

System was definitely too packed...it seemed that no matter where I was, there was a contant flow of people who just can't f***ing walk a straight line if they're life depended on it. WHERE THE F*** ARE YOU ALL GOING, DAMNIT!!!!! , what happened to finding a comfy place to sit, stand, dance, WHATEVER, and just enjoying yourself for a while. TOO MUCH WALKING AROUND! *rant done* It was noticeably worse than usual though...very annoying.

All in all, it was still a good night and I'm glad I went...just not nearly the same value and enjoyment I got from spending $20 and gettting G&D, Infected Mushroom and Rank 1 @ KH ;) :D

Actually almost every single techno event I've been to has had alot of sexy girls. I'm pretty sure they do know who the deejay is up there. I had a chat with one of those sexy girls about him.

AWESOME NIGHT!!

So I guess 3 time's the charm? I didn't bother wasting my money on Hawtin, given that I hated his last 2 sets here. Maybe this was the time I would've liked him, & I missed it. No biggie- I was SOOOO tired that day anyways, I called it an early night.

Yea I didn't like him the other 2 times either, but this time definately made up for it!!

Props Toronto!!

I saw Richie in Ottawa last night, and he told me his gig in Toronto was one of his favs. in the past 5 years or so. :D

-- his set was dope in Ottawa actually... very dancefloor friendly, he didn't get weird and experimental at all really.. I expected something along those lines.. especially considering the album he is promoting.
