Ok, here's the thing, we are all artists, and being artists we have egos and walk around with a chip on our shoulder.
So drop the egos. Lets just try to discuss, learn, and have open minds.
Trance is trance, if you are not following the conventions then you aren't creating trance. That is a fact. Fine. Nothing wrong with that. It doesn't mean that you aren't being innovative or groundbreaking. It just means that you are using the basic framework to create art.
Geeze. |
I think I need to return to the point of the original definition of trance music, check out where trance came from.
Edit: You're completely right though : ) |

So what is the original definition of trance music to you?
To me, it is a repetative music (to put you in a trance) that relies on a 4/4 kick, has a breakdown or two, heavy synths, is dancable, seriously enhances feelings under drug influence, and lies between 130-150bpm. |

Every producer in this forum is striving for one thing - progressing their sound until it is "pro" - and most "pro sounds" are your supersaws, 303 sweeps, etc.. once an artist achieves a pro sound that is the time for experimentation within a genre..
every pro producer has their own distinct sound and you can just tell "that's a dallas superstars track" or "that's a deepsky track" - this is the essence of experimentation within a genre.. |

correction: 4/4 is the time signiture all trance is in.. what you are referring to is a kick on every down-beat
and no, a break beat song is not 3/4 it is still in 4/4 with the kick being on every other down beat, or off beat, or quarter beat etc etc... |

Why are we now humping what I was originally saying? Why are we pretending that I'm some who wandered off into the desert on shrooms and thinks that anything with a consistant thythm is popular mainstream bull? I know there are way too many of those guys out there.. Are there so many that you just automatically assume I'm one of those ignorant s? You criticize my idea with all sorts of silly little variables before arriving to the same comclusion that i arrived at, and then say that you were right all along and that I'm not too sure what I was originally getting at. It's this dogmatic "ed-if-you-do, ed-if-you-don't" attitude that makes a guy me start a post like this in the first place.
We're all on the same note here, most of us, but it's all about who's pathology is right, which is retarded because input variables are inconsequential when arriving at the same conclusion, atleast when we're on such a simple conclusion. maybe i would have had better luck posting "man, dude." .. "in lamerz not being crative suck a dick, yo." would have been more evocative of confluent opinion?
Anyway, lets keep humping alternate pathology to the same conclusion please. |

| If you really would like to get technical, trance music is only an evolutionary or syncopated loop that basically "one-up's" the brain when the suboncious thinks it knows what's going to happen next. Reguardless of time signature, not to mention sometimes I program in 3/3 and it works absolutely seemlessly. |

A lot of fancy talk but you're not really saying anything.
So most of us only replicate the same thing everyone else does. And then? Did you lose your argument there somewhere or did you just want to point out the obvious?
We're all amateurs here. It is very important to know the "rules" so you can think of creative ways of breaking them. |

| ok fine.. you go head the revolution and maybe we'll follow... |

| BTW - " algorithm" is a great title for a song, mind if I use it for one of my minimal technoish percussive songs? |

Well you're absolutely right under the tense that I was proving a thesis and not just making a rhetorical statement for conversational purposes.
