"Blood, guts, and a happy ending. No wonder The Passion of the Christ is a showbiz sensation.
Mel Gibson's messianic meller, which opens today after more free media than Janet Jackson got, and a marketing campaign that could make Harvey Weinstein weep, may rake in $100 million—not to mention the skim from souvenir mugs, coffee-table books, prayer-reminder cards, and pewter spike pendants. How did a film described as an "anti-date movie" generate such buzz? The answer has everything to do with Gibson's canny use of Hollywood hype techniques.
First, stir the . Gibson did this by fanning the fires kindled by Jews (whose fears were well founded, judging from leaked copies of the script). He made outrageous comments on the order of, "Secular Judaism wants to blame the Holocaust on the Catholic Church." He allowed that he'd cut a scene in which the head Jewish priest cries, "His blood be on us and on our children," because, "Man, if I included that in there, they'd be coming after me at my house, they'd come kill me." Guess who they are?
Next, build a base. This Gibson did by flogging the film to a network of fundamentalist churches. Gibson's company, Icon, worked this sale like the pros they are, sending their man out on the road, facilitating block purchases of tickets, and soliciting testimonials from A-list televangelists, even as they kept the film from the eyes of potential critics. But the mass media were wary until The Passion's distributor got involved. In Bob Berney, president of Newmarket, Gibson had chosen a partner with a track record in pitching edgy films about subjects like pedophilia (Happiness) and lesbian serial killers (Monster).
.......
The real story here is the rise of a newly mobilized market and the crossing over of its values. In that respect, Gibson has done what Pat Robertson could only dream about, by enlisting the very techniques his co-religionists object to in Hollywood films. Among these aesthetic values, none is more commercial—and less faithful to the Gospel—than ultra-violence. You won't find epistles dwelling on the finer points of human brutality in the New Testament, but you will find such lessons in the cinema of Brian De Palma. When you see Jesus soaked in gore, think of the blood-bucket scene in Carrie.
Never mind those Caravaggio paintings that inspired Gibson. The real model for this film is Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs, with its relentless depiction of torture, along with every slasher movie that cloaks its intentions in a higher message. Violence has become the measure of verisimilitude. If it's bloody, it looks real. This illusion allows us to enjoy what violence does provide: pleasure. If it weren't so exhilarating, it wouldn't be so popular.
Many people who would never attend a Bible movie will flock to this one because they get to see a man tormented by men as others look lustfully on. The faithful will sublimate this sadomasochistic sensation into religious ecstasy and find it profoundly moving. Either way, Gibson wins. He's made a spectacle of joy in pain—the essence of boffo."
It's all about how much $$$$ goes into the bank account...not about religion, thats for sure. |

yup yup. exactly.
as i said earlier. if mel is a good christian believes in the teachings of jesus, he would be donating the profits of the movies to charity.
not making a ludicrus wad of cash for himself off of the horrible death of who he believes is his savior |

This doesnt really apply to seculars so u can either flame on, or ignore this discussion, but the new Mel Gibson movie is stirring up a huge amount of controversy because many say it is anti-semetic.
many hate groups, white sepremesists a large majority have huge hate for jews. many normal people have mixed feelings about them. but it is all stemming from the belief that Jews killed Jesus. if you "dont" think about it. yes jews did kill jesus. such a horrible crime against the almighty god. but what many christians and other people alike dont understand is that, it was God's will that Jesus be crucified. The Jews actually did God's will by having jesus crucified. if jesus hadnt died in such a way, then we would not be able to be saved, have everlasting life, or ever be accepted into heaven, because of our sinful nature and unrightiousness. we would be doomed forever, because it is only by rightiousness that we are accepted into heaven, not through good works, or just because your a good guy.
jesus died for us, so that we could be saved from this doom, and if one accepts him, becomes christian, and follows the teachings of Jesus, giving up old life, starting anew, then we are righteous before god. none of this could happen if jesus hadnt died on the cross.
---------
maybe we should thank the jews. because all they did was unconsioussly follow God's will to save us from everlasting death. |

| its funny how all you idiots make fun of religious people for their beliefs that you dont believe in. who cares? how does that effect you enough to even open your mouth? go run into a knife. |

it's funny how you religious idiots have a cry whenever science emphasises your own stupidity
Religion does effect people enough to open their mouths, people have been burned alive by the Christian church for daring to suggest that the earth revolved around the sun
Religion is a malignant cancer |

#1: Christians. Go read Galatians 5:22. Those are your tools for bringing people to Christ. Internet forums arent really the place, but using fire, brimstome, and hell arent going to convert anyone.
Jesus used the sames tools I just gave you. Worked pretty well. Check it out.
#2: Religion being root of evil/war/violence? More like it removes fear of wrath, retribution, death, and pain. All it does it take away the mental barriers holding back the person from doing whatever they want. Thus some people devote their lives to the sick, some go on crusades. Technically you could just say that Religion is the ultimate relase and freedom to do what you want. Pity that so many people go wrong eh?
#4: I skipped #3 on purpose. also. Its a movie. Dont be a hypocrite and enjoy Groundhog Day, LoTR, or Donnie Darko (or others of hundreds of films with massive undertones of morality, fate, and destiny) and then bitch about a religious movie. All it is, all it can be is light and color burned into film strips. The true movie goer should be watching mise en scene, lighting, composition, costume, angles. Is it good for what the director was trying to accomplish? I hated Amelie. But i thought it was brilliantly done. Colors of course, but the way she interacted with the audience and helped bring them into her world was brilliant. I could write a paper on all the good things about it and say "in conclusion, i hated it"
you need to be more objective and less selfish. This wasnt made for you or your people (whoever they may be). It was made for Mel. Your job is to sit on your ass and criticise after he spent millions. Whos got the harder job?
In closing, sit back, unpucker, and enjoy it as much as you can. |

This is the most valid point made in this entire argument. Why aren't more people offended at the commercialization of thier spiritual beliefs? Somehow it seems very wrong to use Jesus as a marketing tool to make money, and I'm not even a Christian. There are plenty of times when this has occured, and none of you devout christians seems to give a damn. |
