Thinking about Applying to NYU... (pg. 2)

NYU does offer comp sci courses
I go there and it's a school that honestly just wants to get your money... but then again they offer crazy opportunities to help you out with job search, internship, credits and things you take for your major are very flexible, professors honestly care about you, etc. And nothing compares to the city, the social scene, the stuff we got goin on every day and night...
I don't regret coming to NYU, despite the cost... tho people tell me it's a very good choice to go to a state school and then transfer.
But I'm very happy... and it's only my second semester.

I went to NYU for cs along the way I also picked up a degree in economics. I gotta say that their cs program is lacking. For business and economics however there are great. Not that their program in cs is a complete waste, but I would imagine that building a better program is not difficult. Things might have improved since I left, but I don't know.

Having said that, I think NYU is still worth considering if you can afford it or if you don't mind the loans. And while you're there do a dual degree in something, it can't hurt. Anyways, the reason it's not bad is if you are really interested in cs, you'll learn anyways and a degree from NYU will open doors for you (unless other schools you are considering are cmu, mit and the like).

The other thing, the feeling I got from my Columbia friends is that NYU is more relaxed and less cut-throat.

Want to know more, PM me.

all i know is... if i stayed in new york for school for college i probably would've failed out... there's so many things happening in the nyu area and things open LATE in new york. if u're here for school just keep that in mind... u might have some late FUN nights, instead of doing something like, oh say, studying

I graduated from NYU pre-med....tons of work, but as long as you work hard as you play, you'll be fine...NYC is the greatest city on earth, as long as your not easily influenced.

;)

Im not gonna read any of the previous statement, but after reading what you wrote, this what I think:

Firstly, its all about what your average is at the end and what your SAT score is.

Secondly, the BIGGEST reason why you wont get in is not because of grade, but because of race/creed. If NYU fills their quota for that year in that race/creed (i.e. Chinese, Japanese, Indian, etc..) you wont get in, and thats how ALL top schools are.

Finally, I hope you can afford a 40,000/yr. tuition.

One adivce u must listen, DO NOT go to NYU for CS!

if you are in 10th grade, are you really sure you wanna do CS? i mean, from my point of view, it is a swamped field with terrible job prospects. you could probably do better...

and i think nyu is a fine choice if you can 1) get and and 2) afford it.

oh yeah... student loans and grants! i'm paying roughly 230$ a month every month for 10 years to pay for my education at upenn. w00t!

I agree with butterfly, CS isnt exactly the greatest field to think about going into. Keep one thing in mind, just cause you like it, and just cause you think its fun doesnt exactly mean that thats the job you should get into. It would be nice, but for most of us it doesnt happen that way. I too was on the CS bandwagon in HS, taking AP C++ - than I got into College and was like, there are 3 trillion people going for that career.

It took me my last year in college, which I got kicked out of as well, to figure out what field I wanted to study - medicine. Right now Im a LA major, just accumulating credits, but when I transfer and look towards a master I want to study Nuclear Medicine and Radiology. Its a hot field, a fun field, but not exactly fun to be standing in front of x-rays all day; however, its something I can see myself doing for the rest of my life, comfortably.

I dont want to break your dream, cause I have them too, but you might want to reconsider CS. If you like computers than check out something where engineering is involved - microengineering? I think you might have fun creating computer processors, and who knows - you might make a processor to revolutionize the world.

I take all of this into consideration, and I'll look into what everyone said, CS is just my prime field i want to study, I'm sure ill switch sometime soon. But thanks again for all the advice. :) Oh yeah and I'm white, and ill be applying early decision IF i apply to NYU, so getting my spot taken is not so much a big deal.
Vlad
Chefy, you being 'white' doesnt give you an advantage, your actually at a disadvantage. NYU like multi-cultural, and 'white' doesnt exactly fit into the qualification. I dont know what exactly their quota is, but I could look into it.

2 things:

1. If you get in, dont turn into the NYU snob that think they are above all others - not implying all act like this, but there are alot of them around.
2. Since you consider going early, I suggest you prepare yourself for the immense amount of work you are going to endure.
