| yeh... i'm a sophomore at nyu rite now in the music tech program. nyu is a pretty tite school cuz most of the professors and teachers are chill. the acceptance at nyu has been getting harder and harder becuz of the location and stuff so it may be kinda hard in another two years. but its always good to give it a chance cuz nyu was my reach school as well, and i was accepted so miracles happen:toothless . other than that i can say most of the parties at nyu are kinda wack. 70% of the people here are rich and stuck up. there aren't a lot of chill and relaxed people. but one thing i can say..... trees are sooooo cheap and everyone blazes!:stongue: :stongue: |

NYU was a safety for me with pretty much straight A's and national French contest ass kicker and all those other pretty things that 100,000 other people put on their college apps. Blah. Now I realize it's all a bunch of bullshiiiiit... :wtf:
One piece of advice: just don't freak out over college... it really isn't that important. Really. :tongue2
And yea everyone blazes :eyespop: |

| Hmmm, I'm not sure how NYU's CS program is... honestly, unless you go to a technical school like RPI or RIT or something, state schools are usually much better than private schools (and cheaper too) for CS... Why not look at Stony Brook? It's not really near the city (about an hour and a half by train) but the CS program is supposed to be very good and the school is relatively inexpensive. |

if you are in 10th grade, are you really sure you wanna do CS? i mean, from my point of view, it is a swamped field with terrible job prospects. you could probably do better...
and i think nyu is a fine choice if you can 1) get and and 2) afford it. |
Hmm... many of the CS graduates (myself included) found pretty decent jobs... what happened is that a lot of people hopped on the CS bandwagon when that was THE field to be in, but now that the IT industry has simmered down, the companies are a lot more pickier on who they hire... Joe Schmoo with 2 intro to Computer Science classes under his belt, and his copy of The Basics of Java isn't gonna get hired in the IT industry, where back in the heyday, if you knew that Java referred to something other than 'coffee' the companies would beat down your door to try and get you to work for them.
The biggest hurdle to wanna be CS majors is that they get stuck in one small niche and don't wanna diversify. A CS student that can not only do Java but also knows networking basics, how to install Linux, how to set up databases and webservers, how to make webpages, how to design interfaces... is much more valuable to the companies than a simple codemonkey.
To the original poster - if you really love CS, go for it... though some of the later courses will be really difficult and extremely boring, it's nothing like the CS you're expecting... but if you think it's a quick way to making good money, stay far away. |

another fellow nyu'er here...
there's truth to wut everyone says and yea...it's really wut u make of it. u pay more for a no campus college but the connections u make is worth it. u gotta really have ur head on straight to survive here, but its more so a byproduct of the city itself as opposed to nyu's fault.
a little anecdote: a fellow roomie managed to smoke himself to a 0.0 GPA one semester. 3 Fs and 1 Incomplete. that ain't easy man...didn't help that our dorm was 75% potheads and the dealer was across the hall. u gotta grow up fast here though.
anyway, i dunno much about the CS program, but i was accepted into CAS undecided with a 3.4 GPA (~B+) i did have good SAT scores though and a load of extra-curricular activities.
biggest thing is cash...supposedly, next year's tuition is going up another 6%. glad i'll be outta here by then. |

Chefy (and anyone else applying to colleges),
Especially if you're thinking about applying Early Decision, be sure to first visit different schools in different geographic areas, at least the ones you might have any interest in - unless you're absolutely dead set on being in NYC or at NYU, but even so, this might still be good to do, to get some perspective. Do this preferably while their classes are in session, and all their students, faculty, etc. are there. You can then get a feel of what life is like at each place, get info about their academic programs, and also talk to people there and ask them questions.
What other schools are you considering?
It might also help to ask your guidance counselor at school about what kinds of grades (and SAT scores, etc.) past students who got into NYU had
Same with asking admissions officers at NYU
Definitely do try to get the best grades you can, in the most challenging classes that you can handle - to get into the best school you can get into and go to, even if it's not NYU. |
