To be fair, I accept either definition. It's an "AND" thing for me, being either:
1) an umbrella term like electronica or Electronic Dance Music (and electronic music that can't always be danced to, like various experimental atonal works without a defined tempo)
2) the specific style which you are referring to
I do this for several reasons -- one of them is historical precedent.
Juan Atkins, one of the techno pioneers, said it best. And not only him... Kraftwerk championed the term "techno-pop", as did Yellow Magic Orchestra. "Techno" as a word is pretty vague... so to me, it just means music that is TECHNOlogically created (either synths, samplers, or acoustic instruments which have been processed extensively by computers or some such thing). Not a problem. Some of the original Detroit techno pioneers were influenced by Chicago house anyway, and house was influenced by disco, which was influenced by earlier techno-pop (or proto-techno as they called it then, now appearing in a modified form as a kind of electroclash/new new wave/nu electro/etc.).

Even more confusing is that "electro" is short for "electronic".
But true.
More branches grow on the tree, but the roots are the same. And it still needs water and sunshine and plenty of happy dancing ravers (is that an outdated term or what? or is it? clubbers? dancers? anyhoo, I still like "ravers") to keep it going.

Yes. It's interesting, because I met Karl Bartos (formerly of Kraftwerk) and he told me that one of his influences was
James Brown. Today, I think "techno" is a term to describe and introduce all kinds of electronic music. In fact, there were a lot of electronic musicians around when Cybotron started, and
I think maybe half of them referred to their music as "techno." However, the public really wasn't ready for it until about '85 or '86. It just so happened that Detroit was there when people really got into it. |

eduardo you seem to think that all techno is is bangin beats and a lot of noise.
what about artists like richie hawtin or sven vath who play the more european electro/minimal techno. You see techno is a vast expanse of sounds that you clearly haven't explored yet or you wouldn't make such idiotic threads claiming you have more knowledge than everyone on tranceaddict about techno.
As for mauro picotto i know it clearly pains you (the techno purist) that a once trance producer seems to be making techno tunes that most techno dj's will play, but unfortunately he is and we are stuck with him for now so deal with it..
