well i still dont understand how they can pass stupid law like this one (mass behaviour modification -no smoking-no drinking-no dancing-no unprotected sex-no whatever they tell us, and trust me it can happen) but now i wanna try and quit |
Miki, this is not mass behaviour modification, it's called caring for your health and the health of the people around you. Out of all the evils that are out there, I have seen with my own eyes the direct correlation between smoking and the effects it has on the human body and I remain convinced, beyond the shadow of the doubt, that this ban is a great thing.
And I've never heard of any "no dancing" laws, unless you're in the States :p |

i can't wait for this.
and there are "no dancing" laws in New York. You need a special permit to open a place where there is dancing and its hard to get or something. I believe its called Cabaret by-law but i'm not sure. |

I remember reading about that - I think it was the loophole Giuliani was using to try to shut down after hours in NYC at the time... don't know how far he got?! |

i kinda agree with this and i kinda don't...
ireland i believe was the first place to introduce it and it is being enforced properly as far as i know.
i'm a smoker and i love to have a few when i've been drinking, i know a few people who are like me, some of them are non-smokers who only smoke in social conditions.
It's true that when there is poor ventilation, smoking in clubs is terrible. I remember one night at Viva where my eyes were actually tearing because of the amount of smoke in the place. Digusting.
The smell of cigarettes is nasty, that's true too. I don't particularly enjoy my clothes smelling of stale smoke when i get home either.
There are so many things i could name that are bad about smoking, as most of you could too obviously. But the thing is... what about the people who don't _want_ to quit smoking because it's something they enjoy doing? Yeah we know it kills us, we know the health risks, yet we choose to do it anyways. What is so wrong with that? It's a choice we make because we're free to do so.
Smoking sections would be nice i think. A good middle ground between the 2. I'm not saying make an area in an open club a smoking section because that would serve no purpose as the smoke would be going all over the place anyways, but how about a seperate room which non-smokers don't have to go through? Make it properly ventilated and it won't feel like you suffocate everytime you walk in there...
The Irish govt figured they did a great thing when the banned smoking inside public places however, i can tell you now that walking on the sidewalks downtown you are assailed by clouds of smoke from smokers who are all outside because they don't have anywhere else to smoke. It's not pleasant either. And the countless amount of cigarette butts on the street are increasing the amount of litter in town too because, let's face it, they're not gonna put special ashtrays outside for smokers. People won't just quit because they can't smoke inside if they are die-hard smokers, and it will still bother the non-smokers when they walk down the street... So what next after that? No smoking outdoors either?
Meh.
Like i said, i'm not for it, and i'm not against it. Just in the middle trying to decide which idea is better in the long run while trying to figure out where i'll have my daily cigarette today :p |

When i went to Arc in NYC there was no smoking allowed AT ALL in the club. The "smoking room" was a door that led outside to a barricaded area *it was on the street. It was great in the summer, cause you got a nice bit of fresh air, but during the winter i'm sure it's HORRIBLE

| maybe it would be a good idea if clubs had a seperate smoking room, bcuz for people who dont agree with this new law, they could use the special smoking room to smoke the hell they want.. they have that kind of system at some bars/restaraunts. |

I can hardly wait for the smoke free environment. Only 25% of the population smokes, so why do the rest of us have to suffer when we go out to bars & clubs.
I'll probably even go out more often. |

I am from Kingston, and live in Ottawa for school. Both of these places are non-smoking cities, and have been for a while. It's awesome, when you come home from the bars you feel great ! You may even be able to go to work the next morning without showering if you accidently sleep in.
I have an argument for the ppl who disagree with the non-smoking proposal. Name one good health quality, or one thing at all about smoking? There isn't any !!
1. It's gross
2. It's soo bad for your health
3. It's an addiction, addictions make ppl weak IMO
4. It's expensive
That's why the smoking ban is a great idea in Toronto ! I am suprised it's taken this long to happen. |
