PC DJ Game (summer project) (pg. 2)

1. Music: yes, there will be music all the way through this game. At first i was thinking about simply using MIDIs, but i've scratched that out in favor for mp3/wma/ogg. i'll see which one is best suit for this project. While i'd like the best quality music, i'm gonna have to favor the idea of a smaller size final program. Songs will be edited to save space (good bye 5 minute buildup). I want to use the idea of scripting events to a soundtrack for drama/etc. I will do all the sound for this game.
2. Battle System: I will only be using RPGMaker to ease the code of the unique battle system. C++ will take care of the rest after i take the time to translate it. Only the main programmers of this project will know the details about the battle system until the first release.
3. graphics: I'm going to need serious help with this. yes, i hope to have "cartoon" drawings of actual big name DJs. Cute lil armin...no wait...
4. Story: This is the section i am most excited about. Absolutely anyone can contribute to this. The story will be very broad. basicly:
quote:
you are an unknown DJ. Your passion for spinning music has hindered the other aspects of your life such as your job. You show up late to work and your just a inch away from being fired. you do your tedious work, go home and low-and-behold, your boss calls. He heard you were a DJ and he wants you to spin at his daughters birthday. At the party, he is told that he will be sharing the night with another day, supposedly to prevent "exhaustion" of an all nite duty. You put on a trance track, and it seems you have just ruined the whole nite for all these pop music lovers. You are booed off the stage and the other DJ takes the spotlight, who starts off his set with Jessica Simpson - Take my Breath Away (Yes, this song deserves all the bad publicity it can take)
You go to sleep and you hear a knock at the door. It's the bosses secretary. She says that you made a good attempt to promote trance music, and she would like you to meet her brother, who owns a club downtown. Well, you go to meet this guy, and he just happens to be the DJ that stole you night!

And from here on, they develop a rivalry to be #1, from stealing each other's vinyls, to bad press, to...well...
this is where TAs come in. Simply just give me ideas of what crazy things can go on in the life of a DJ. Rain during an outdoor set? accidently being booked to a hip hop club? food poisoning?

well, i'm kinda tired and i do have a small program i need to make before midnight. so, i hope this all works great!

well, just finished the company product. i think we are all going to start seeing a lot of people winning the lottery ;)

anyways, i'm finally free. well, not really. I still gotta go to company board meetings to discuss new software ideas, but it's no biggie. Doodle this and doodle that.
anyways, i'm focusing all my resources on the battle system. I'm not worrying about anything else, story, graphics, music. i'm treating the battle system as it's own program, so i'll release a small beta once its finished just for people to playtest and get feedback. It will have 1 simple battle against a DJ consiting with 4 songs. Go ahead:
recommend me the enemy DJ (no Ttrance, i won't allow ATB as a choice :p), and pick 4 trance songs.

btw, what are the most efficient audio codecs? mp3s feel too big for a project like that. what is OGG? wma? a-trac?
Prodigy Child
I don't know much about file formats, but I do know that OGG is sirposed to be really good, and have a very small file size, its a much better format than MP3.
Turbonium
Yea, .ogg is superior.
Tranc3
I haven't measured it myself, but apparently the ogg-vorbis format takes up more of your processor to decode the audio than does the mp3 format. However, I wouldn't think the consumption rate would be significantly higher, and the quality:space ratio is certainly higher.

well, so far:
Well, i've completed a lot of the battle engine now. IMO, it's pretty unique system, but i do have my doubts about it. It pretty much fits my initial vision, however, i'm pretty sure there are going to be exploits and stuff like that. So, why not there be a beta. For what i think it's just going to be a single battle, no story, no maps, nothing except a single fight. Just to appeal to u all, pick a DJ to battle in the demo. Choose 3 songs. and 1 song for the game start screen.

(i really liked the Tiesto in Concert fireworks on the main manu)

btw, what is river city ransom? i hear there is a "matrix reloaded" trailer using the engine of River City Ransom. sprites are nice!

it sounds like a good idea at first, but on the other way it sounds nearly impossible to implement.

first: how in hell are you going to simulate dj'ing? atomix-like mixing? you do know what dj'ing consists of, right? beatmatching, phrasematching, track selection, even harmonic mixing.. of course putting all these concepts into the game may make it boring and over-realistic, but you should think a lot about it

second: the tracks! an essential thing in dj'ing is picking music, spending loads of time browsing stores for vinyls, developing your own style. now about the style, are you gonna only allow trance or let the dj develop his kind of music? but the worst thing is evaluating track-selection. it sounds nearly impossible for a computer to evaluate the energy of tracks, the way they fit together, the way a set flows.

on another way, you could just make an algorhytm that gives more points the more anthems you play, that doesn't care about trainwrecks, and that gives the most points the most stupid scratches you make, dj-jean style. it would sell more :stongue:

Does it has to be a game about DJ-ing? Because I think you might be onto something here.
