Cyrus, Rico:
how do I detune something? I don't even know what that means :/ Both you guys mentioned to detune the oscillators... is detuning something ONLY involved with oscillators or can other things be detuned as well?
Oh yeah, what does detuning do? ;) |

detuning is a slightly frequency modification of an oscillator. (often named as "fine", "tune" or something like that) so, that that the osc plays out of the key. if you do it with 2 oscs in the positive and negative direction, it will produce a much more fatter sound! |

Exactly. Let's say for example to make a regular saw. You take an Init patch from your synth, which means it's just a raw saw...plain, simple and boring sounding. Now, you go to the oscillators...2, 3 or whatever. You take osc #1 and fine tune it to -25, then you take osc #2 and fine tune it to +25. That'll give the sound a slight opposite detune...that chorussy fatness. Reverb, delay and you're set with the basics. Now, to shape the sound, you gotta play with the ADSR envelope (Attack, Delay, Sustain and Release). You can hear the difference in sound by tweaking the knobs. It's very easy to understand...just go to Google and search for subtractive synthesis or synths. You'll find websites with the basics of how sound is made in a synth. Once it makes sense, you'll know what do do with the sounds. :) |
