As for the original question, I'd probably make a joke out of it. Something along the lines of:
ME:Blah blah blah... are you single??
FITTY:No, I've got a boyfriend.
ME:Yeah, me too. Hahah... blah blah blah
But that's just me. At least you get a friend out of it. And you never know, making her laugh could make all the diference later on when the loser she's with trats her like crap and she wants to be with a decent bloke.
