I get what your saying Bragi, and it is a fine line - where does increased security become invasion of privacy?
Thats a question for everyone here and theres no right or wrong answer (though everyone will believe their answer is the right one and everyone else is wrong! :D)....
I highly reccomend everyone check out the movie "Equilibrium" if you get the chance! Fantastic movie on this very topic.... |

America's airports are a joke - Australia's are not......
I just felt that needed to be clarified. |
sorry mate, you obviously haven't been to the airport recently. C'mon man they have even implemented a gladwrap system for baggage. Where you pay $5.00 for them to gladwrap your items to ensure no tampering will be made during flights. (not that this holds any relevance, just thought it was quite humurous at the quality of our Aussie airports)
Just our of pure curiousity lethal, are you of ethnic origin? And please don't take it the wrong way, it's out of harmless curiosity.
Its just funny that nobody see's it as an invasion of privacy because they have never been directly effected.
Next time your at the airport, grow a beard and wear a turbin... after you receive a full cavity search, we will see if you still hold the same opinion
Not that I'm speaking from first hand experience :D
It is pretty sad to see security measures increased to such a ridiculous extent. You will be targeted if you look middle eastern, or are dressed according to your culture. Its racial profiling that the media has etched into the minds of the weak. This is why you see people who were gourments for religious purposes, get spat on and such. Does it really give you a sense of safety watching innocent people get searched?
If someone really wanted to smuggled something on the plane, do you think they would stick out or blend in?
Its like if your name has an 'Ali' or 'Mohammed' you will automatically be deemed as suspicious because thats what makes the general public comfortable. A huge false sense of security.
In my opinion, it is an evasion of privacy. Being a migrant myself, I have been subject to alot of racial profiling. Would I blow up a plane? No. Just because a rogue militant group proclaimed they blow things up for islam, does not mean all muslims are guilty for their actions. It is the media who emphasise the fact that this religion is responsible, and all those who are weak minded will adhere.
Pauline Hanson is racist, the general sentiment is that all aussies share the same values as her. Do I agree with this? No.
Because I know everybody has a mind of their own, and I wouldn't blame a whole race for the actions of an ignorant few |

Rez just to let you know im a white caucasian, so ill admit ive never had real problems with racism. Though i will say that after growing up in the country and then having lived in Sydney for the last 4 years - i reckon racism is much worse in the cities then in the country. I have my own theories for this but i wont bring them up here (thats for another time and another topic:))....
And just to let you know - that gladwrapping of your stuff at the airport - isnt for security reasons, its for liability reasons. Theyre doing that now so that things inside your bag cant go "missing" (ie get flogged by ground staff) without being much more obvious that your stuff has been tampered with. It also makes it easier for them to see where abouts the tampering occured and thus track the thief...
Hope that clears that up for you. :) |

haha yeah dude, i know what the gladwrapping is for..
as i pointed out in brackets....
just making a point that Aust airports arean't anything special :)
you'll know what im talking about if you've been to Singapore's or Dubai's international airports.
just also like to mention that American airports are pretty sucky, i mean they evacuate buildings at a drop of a hat (this happened yesterday i think, not sure of the details)
by doing all this, the terrorists have achieved their goal.
to invoke terror.
on another off related note, if you have been watching bb. the recent debate which Paul was debating with many of the BB members (iraq war), did touch on a few good points. the bush administration should be shot! |
