Music doesn't make people fight but rather people who fight follow certain kinds of music!!
Generally people who follow top 40 & rap music are young with very weak personalities who belong to that herd mentality and need a sense of belonging, so they follow the crowd, dress like it , listen to the lowest common denominator music, and act like it. Their only way of differentiating themselves is by way of physical assertion.
Add alcohol , a natural depressant and cocaine, a pure stimulant, and you have insecure depressed idiots who are highly excitable, a small dose of testosterone will just do the rest!!!
As to guns and knives .....well they are the latest fashion accessories....just watch FT all the designers are showing them this year LOL......next time you are in line at Boa bitching about the security searches, just remember this thread, and the fact that all it take is one idiot and one gun to ruin everybody's fun and unfortunately there is no shortage af any of the above!!! |

this is true but its diffent kind of scrapping. if you scrap a farm boy he might just knock you senseless, better then getting swarmed.
Also its more the hiphop culture to blame then the music for the fighting, but then again don't culture and music go hand in hand |

"I'm here to drink beer and kick ass . . . and I'm almost out of beer." --Dazed and Confused
Heh, heh. I've only gotten into two fights in my life at clubs, both while I was in college. This always shocks people who know me because I'm pretty laid-back and easygoing. One fight was because of racial epithets thrown my way and the other because some drunk was pissed at my buddy and thought he'd take it out on me. Ah well, what can you do? I know violence is rarely justified, but sometimes ya gotta stand up for yourself, no? |

| I agree that you can't hold a certain type of music responsible or regard it as the "causative" agent for people fighting. However, one thing is clear, and that is that different types of music are associated with a different culture/mentality. Dance music like house has always been about a positive and uplifting vibe, openness, and acceptance. This is one of the reasons that the early warehouse parties in Chicago and New York (the birthplace of house) were dominated by the gay scene. Hip Hop (in the early days and even today) has always had an element of homophobia and mysogyny (sp?) and this whole "violent" mentality. I read a really good book called "Last Night a DJ saved My life." It's about the history of DJing and talks about alot of this kinda stuff...just so people don't think I"m making this up. |

Music like all other art forms is a manifestation ,among others ,of a pre-existing culture or disposition. Gangster rap did not give rise to gangsters but the exact opposite. EDM did not give rise to the designer drug culture, but it is rather a marriage of convenience. Blaming the media whether it is TV or Music or any other form for people's behaviour is an easy way out to explain what ails our society.
1920's & 30's Chicago was ripe with gangsterism and violence, yet TV did not exist and music was in the form of swing, Jazz, blues and classical-hardly what you call violent!!
Our problems are socio-economic and too complex to address in this forum.
To simplify things, one can say that "birds of a feather stick together", and some of those feathers are really ugly!!!
Music in all its forms is a pressure release and may indeed lessen the likelyhood of violence despite its sometimes hateful words!!!
Tolerance my friends!!!!! |
