| BTW: I have a P4 right now. and i have no clue what all these BIOS and overclocking thingies mean. I have a vague idea, but could someone maybe PM me and explain it to me in a simplified way? Also, what kind of risks am I putting my computer at in terms of overheating if i overclock? |

| cpu-overclocking is unnecessary. gettin 0.3-0.5 ghz more is not that important. your computers speed depends on many other things... |

| is 2.4 GHz considered "fast"? |

depends on you... what do you use your comp. for? |

Clock speed doesn't really matter nowadays
a 2.4Ghz celeron would be as fast as a 1.6Ghz p4 northwood
a 2.4Ghz athlon XP would be as fast as a 3.4Ghz P4 northy

If your planning on overclocking I'd recommend upping the cpu voltage too. As it'll need more power. This'll heat it up more too though (in addition to the overclocking).
It's been awhile since I've done this stuff but I take it you don't have to unlock the bridges with conductive pen now? (used to be able to do it with a pencil before that). Unless you only want to up the FSB speed and that not the clock muliplier?
Also I don't really see the point in it... |

multipurpose really. Schoolwork, some gaming, music, burning stuff, etc. the real reason i want to up the speed is becuase I recently purchaed the game Far Cry. The min. requirements said P3 1 Ghz with 256 MB RAM. Recommended was 2.0 GHz + but with 512 RAM. Now that I think about it, the reason the game is running slow was probably because i have only 256 RAM. My video card is a GeForce 4 MX 420, so that's not the problem...do you think that an increase in ram, say up to 512 would make the game run faster? The computer had to create virtual memory files while i was playing, so that worried me. |

Say what? not a problem? think again buddy... upgrade your video card, thats your problem
Far Cry is very graphically intense and I really doubt you can get decent playable frame rates with that card |

It runs fine on mine 9500pro with a 2000XP. No oc atall. Try just auto detecting the settings and don't turn on AAF.
BTW are MX's not ? I've not kept up with GC's lately so I might be wrong. |

ram upgrade is not expensive. I recommend you to do that. (not for gaming, you'll need more ram for everything) I think you improve the performance of that game by upgrading your video card...
even though your pc is not a gaming machine, it's more than enough for the other things you mentioned. so don't worry about your cpu speed at all... |

the slow down in farcry which u experience is due to ur crappy video card and 256MB of ram.
invest in a radeon 9800pro or higher and 512-1GB ram will show a significant improvement. |
