While this may be true in some small segments of the population, I believe that the majority of people are far more tolerant and understanding than you may believe.
Your belief that "we" as a culture think such negative attitudes are the norm and are now acceptable adds fuel to the fire and perpepuates a rift.

Like it or not, i truly beleive that the majority of western mentality percieves the middle east and its people in the way the media has presented them as. There are very few people that look up to the middle east and its people after september 11th, and even before with the representation of middle easterners as savage terrorists wanting to kill white people and beating thier hejab covered wives.

You cannot deny that there are more negative opinions regarding the middle east than there are positive ones.

I have friends from Kuwait, Pakistan, Iran etc... ive always found them to be much more real and down to earth than most normal canadians. ANd yes i refer to them as "them" because they are middle eastern and asian and i am not. that Political correct BS about us all being one. If this were the case we wouldnt have so many government programs identifying "different groups" for special help.

CNN is full of anyways... i never believe what they say. I dont watch them much at all anymore especially after the Sars/mad cow/iraq BS which showed how biased they really are.

Yeah but you can't realy blame the media for that I don't really see a lot of positive things comming out of the middle east anyways...like it or not it's just the fact of life...
I'm not saying they are bad people...but i wouldn't really just blame the media for that...

I suppose i chose my words poorly.
I don't deny that most major media outlets, like CNN, have been responsible for a lot of negative portrayal.
I was offended more at the suggestion that most people, particularly outside the US, can't see through the fear- and hate-mongering.
I believe the perception that all Westerners look down upon Middle Eastern cultures creates a self-fulfilling prophecy, and the suggestion that we've all been brainwashed by the media is offensive to anyone who can think for themselves.

I'm a torontonian and a canadian and I'm not greedy, nor rude, nor all these things people are saying we are...

not really sure why even still its point at the majority.like said earlier there is good and bad seeds in all places

HOWEVER

I will argue that immigrants to this country and city are not all pleasant and sweet as pie. fuk that no way.

and if they are its only going to be that way till they fully outnumber us and can then start getting away with being their bastard selves.

I'm from scarborough in the thick of it all and they dont care about this place except for making their lives better. People who live in it know what its about, those outside of it DO NOT HAVE A CLUE!

Yes there are good and bad everywhere but i cant deny the fact that i could never ever see the same kind of hospitality ive seen elsewhere in Toronto... people here simply arent as nice/friendly/trusting nor do they have the time or the will.

Pakistani's and (even afghani's) are not considered middle eastern. Pakistan is south asian.

i can't believe that some of you are still trying to group canada with US. if you want to really be a proud canadian then watch bowling for columbine.

diabolic starting this thread, makes him look like a retard. and all of you talking about this race and that being one way or the other, you are all retarded too. there are good and bad people in all races, . no matter if they are immigrants or if they are true born canadians.

forget cnn "brainwashing", brainwashing only works on retards.

i know that you claim to have travelled all over. you really think that toronto is any friendlier than any other city? people's friendliness to you is a reflection of how friendly you are to them. seriously.

Jayx1
Toronto is not very friendly at all. And people's dispositions are definately different everywhere. How shocked was i when i was in latin america and europe and had complete strangers offer me rides to places. Try even asking for directions in downtown toronto.... good luck
