i want a mini ipod but they ain't here yet, and they're more expensive than the original ipod, which is already fricken expensive.

pos ipod.

i'm gonna buy another, cheaper, mp3 player instead when i'm in singapore on thurs. any suggestions/recommendations?

looking at the $300-$400 AUD range.

The iRiver is pretty good I hear. You can probably get a good 256MB mp3 player with a built in FM radio tuner for the price you are willing to pay. Have a look at this:

Heres what i got:

$160 - MP3 Player with 128 meg on board and SD slot. Also FM radio plus you can record from radio onto disk. Also voice recorder. (from ebay)
$85 - 256 meg SD memory card (from ebay)

all up $245 for 384 meg, which is more than enough, fits around 30 songs (10 minute songs that is). It does the job nicely.

stop being tight and drop the extra 100-150 on getting an ipod. There is a reason they are popular (not the mac hype machine either, though the mac fanboys could be a different story).

dunno bout the "tight" part, but he is right, get a 15GB IPOD, I PROMISE you will not regret it, they really are awesome!!!

you're talking about spending $300-400 and that'll hold 128-384 MB, but put a lil extra in and you have 15GB, come on man, just splurge a lil, get some money off ur folks and pay em back in a few weeks if u have to!

I was looking at my friend's 20 gig IPOD recently and they are really something special.. even though it is pricey. I say that you pay the extra 100 bucks or whatever it is and buy one. :)

If audio quality is a high priority, the audiophiles on www.hydrogenaudio.org seem to agree that the Nomad Jukebox 3 is the best. It has optical or analog line in, 2 line outs, and uses a standard laptop hard disk drive so you can easily upgrade to a larger capacity drive. The only disadvantage is that its size is a bit larger. Couple this with good quality portable headphones and you'll be set.

Hey if your only after a small amount of memory i HIGHLY reccommend the Creative Nomad MuVo's (ive got the MuVo NX), i got the 256MB for $270 (from Bing Lee) so i dont doubt you can pick one up a lot cheaper in singapore! Its about the size of a cigarette lighter, weighs absolutely nothing, is basically a usb stick (so no need for extra cables and connectors) and the sound quality is great (and its apparently twice as good if you use your own headphones rather then the earplugs given with it! And thats saying a lot seeing as the quality with the earplugs is better then what i get out of my stereo!! )....

So yeah i highly reccommend the creative's if your after pretty much a usb stick with 256MB, if your after something with more space and your not worried about the fact that you need cables, etc.. go an ipod or iriver - there the only 2 ive heard consistently good reviews about! :)

get a nomad player - those things are ing wicked - if hybrid junkie had internet access i'm sure he'd rant on about them for a looong time
i think they're around 300-400 and hold like 10gb or something nice like that

I have a 20gig Ipod and if i could, i think that i would have avoided it and looked around a bit more...

pros:
neat interface and fairly streamlined/optimised
even though it's mac native, it seems to be fairly easy/quick to copy songs computer/ipod
small & light
plain cool

cons:
hole in pocket
battery only lasts 8 hours. enough to get to uni, listen all day then get half way home... a 12 hour battery would be much better or maybe replaceable so you can carry a spare, or just one that would last at least two days without recharge. maybe 20 hours would be nice...
seems to crash from time to time
now probably my biggest nitpick with it is the equaliser, or lack of it. the unequalised sound is faily tinny and to hear any depth you have to have the sound up way above what you should to hear substantial low end (i'm talking from a quality not just a bigger is better point of view) even with my sony mdr700's/through my hi-fi and with the limited (non customisable) eq's that come with it, the eq seems to work by preamping/impeding the sound *before* the main amplifier to the effect that if a song has a reasonable amount of bass (i.e. most trance) it seems to distort the sound (clip) even before it goes through the main amplifier (so that it distorts even at low headphone levels)... all in all, i have my old sony headphones from my discman and crave the sound quality from it, but it is so good to be able to carry most of my livesets around everywhere at the touch of a button...

i'd say go to a shop with you headphones (the ones that come with it are ok, but u'll want better) with a cd of trance, all sorts of stuff from hybrid, chillout and alphazone/cosmic gate as well as the normal stuff then get them to put it onto an ipod and *listen*, i dont mean just listen but really listen to what your hearing... if its ok with you, then get one, if not, maybe a iriver or nomad would be the better choice. if only...
