The Liberals and NDP combined have exactly 50% of the seats...one seat short of a majority, true...but really all they need is that ONE Green Party vote (and Green and NDP are the two closest parties, I'd argue) or ONE Bloc vote to pass legislation. I think Martin will have a much easier time working with Layton and one Green Party member than he would with Harper. In fact, I'd put money on NDP cabinet representation to lay the foundation for a good working relationship between the Liberals and NDP.

What Green Party vote? The only member that was elected that wasn't one of the 4 major parties was an independant from B.C., and he used to be a former conservative, so if anything, his vote would likely be more aligned with the Tories than the NDP.

Also, keep in mind that true, while the Liberals / NDP would only have to secure 1 additional vote from some other party to pass legislation, that assumes that absolutely every member is always present in the house, no one is ill, etc. Not going to be all that effective a government, especially on an international stage if every single cabinet minister and backbencher is chained to their desk in Ottawa in order that every vote can pass.

Another thing to keep in mind is that in all likelyhood, Peter Miliken, the Liberal member for Kingston & the Islands will also be re-elected Speaker of the House yet again. That effectively reduces the Liberal vote by one as he would only get to vote in the event of a tie.

yup...my bad...I thought the indie seat actually went to the Greens...apparently it's a Tory defector, so I guess that can't be counted upon...well...time to woo a Tory or Bloc member away from their party to join the Liberals or the NDP ;)

baystreetboi, I see what you're saying...but the same holds true for the Tories and Bloc...every member would have to be present, etc. I guess I'm just saying that Harper doesn't hold as much power as some would like to think. I would say Layton actually will have more influence than him in many ways...but here's hoping that EVERYONE works together for all of our benefit! :)

Do they need a full 155 votes to pass legislation or just half of all members present? ie the liberals will only be able to pass legislation when (Sick/Vacationing Consevatives & Bloc) > (Sick/Vacationing Liberal & NDP)??
MarkT
half of whoever is present for the vote, is my understanding...that's why the indie seat potentialyl holding the deciding vote, should the Liberals and NDP agree on an issue isn't *that* big of a deal...the chances that ALL members would be present, and that EVERY MP votes along with their party, isn't a common occurance.

Having said that...if there is ever a crucial vote, you can bet that whoever doesn't show had better have a *really* good reason for not being there ;)

LMAO... imagine the conflicts that will result from this...

Example Headline:

STEPHEN HARPER KICKS CONSERVATIVE MP OUT OF PARTY FOR HAVING STROKE ON DAY OF BIG ABORTION LEGISLATION DECISION.
MP defends himself by arguing that stroke was unpreventable...

the party whips have just become the most important people in each party....

Umm...Did anyone consider Belinda Stronach voting with the liberals or even switching over? Remember, her beliefs are more liberal than Paul Martin himself (ie. same sex marriage).

Did she win her riding? I thought she lost to the liberals... maybe I'm wrong.

Let's put our partisan divisions behind, spark up a doob, and toke one for democracy.

The conservatives didn't gain the momentum I'd hoped for in order to get the seats in Ontario, but all in all, we have a great country that is free and prosperous and the rights to our own voiced opinions is preserved. God bless Canada!

Congratulations Canada on rewarding a bunch of theives and crooks.

I will not be celebrating Canada Day this year.

Anyway, the country won't be around in 2006. That's the year Quebec AND Alberta will secede.
