Just to be clear, are you speaking in generalities, or are you referring to someone specific when you mention a "dereliction of duty?"

If we are speaking in generalities, then I would say that Bush most certaintly isn't guilty of dereliction of duty, unless of course he never showed up.

Or that he failed to show up for his medical exam.

You know, it's funny, we had men and women getting their asses shot off and their heads blown off their bodies, while putting their lives on the line for others over there in Vietnam, yet we had a few wiesels who just didn't want to show up and understand what constitutes a real hero, either for bad knees, had "other obligations", or was just a plain chicken to fight for what they supposedly believed was right for their country.

I suppose we just can't decisively pin "dereliction of duty" on him, but for his meager little "Air Guard" status, flying planes that were taken out of comission, he couldn't even show up for a mere 3 months while his daddy's buddies were more than obliged to have other kids get their heads blown off in his place.

My ing hero.

good luck. your motives need it. that, or your audiences' naive'te

My motives are, more or less, pursuaded by what I see. From what I've seen so far, I'm inclined to think Bush is hiding a little something. But hey, you seem to think that my naive audience needs a lesson from me. I'm sorry, but there are others in the mainstream press who question Bush's history, whether you choose to have your head out of the sand and listen or not:

(admittedly not mainstream, but it did come from an actual war veteran)

But hey, it really is in lockstep with everything else your Administration does. They sure do like to keep things secret, don't they?:

I don't want some fool telling me I can't know simply because he said so and because he's the President. I don't give two s who you are, citizens have a right to know.

Now I know Kerry is no favorite of yours, but I want to be clear that I have an obligation to feel the exact same way as you do towards Kerry should he be elected.

Out of curiosity, what are people's opinions about the Chicago Tribune's drive towards unsealing the candidate Ryan's divorce records?

Does Chicago have a large standing army of women?

I'd hate to think they'd be serving duty under the false impression that he's a nice guy who was in a successful marriage... and recieved a deserving honorable discharge at it's completion.

Let's get this guy!!
This people has spoken:p :p

the drive? totally none of their business. Ryan? don't really know who he is, but suspect that would be motive for the drive.

it all takes a backseat to his ex-wife IMO. she's purty.:whip:

IMO, this election is absolutely horrible. I don't think America is safe with either man being elected. I agree, however. I'm going to be the exact same way with Kerry as I am with Bush. The only way to make an educated vote is to know all possible information on BOTH runners, AND their VP's.

The only thing I'm not really particular about is what President got a blow job from what girl. That kind of scandal is worthless. Family issues are what they are- family issues.

Bush is such a ing tool. He ticked me off when he commented the difference between Edwards and Cheney was that Edwards can't be president (referring to if the president were to die), yet Cheney has no political experience except for his vice presidency and he's got that heart condition. As if he could take over

Im sorry to pull this back up, but after reading this entire thread I still want to say that I hate Dick Fuggin' Cheney. He's freaking running this country from the backseat. And dont even get me started on Haliburton.

John-Squared in 2004.
I cant friggin' wait.

I think this is a fair question, and it lies on the broader question of what should be considered "fair-game" for a politician's background. While I'm sure there are some liberal examples of stepping a little out of bounds and reach a little too far for those "non-issues" on conservatives, there are certainly two instances that come to mind where conservatives have clearly stepped over the lines for me:

1. Tens of millions of dollars investigating a blow job, rather than the actual central issue of that investigation (Whitewater, wasn't it?)

2. Illegally leaking the name to a conservative reporter of a covert CIA agent who's purpose is investigating foreign countries' WMD creation and/or proliferation, just for a little "payback" because her husband ratted out the Administration's distortions and false claims on Iraq's nuclear WMD capabilities.

To me the bar has been lowered so far one can simply crawl right over it, and I must be honest and say it has been this way for both sides. We assume that the press is out there in our best interests to find certain character flaws of politicians exhibited in their past, whether it be questionable actions, questionable voting, etc. In truth I think most of us have caught on to the fact that the press is not always in our best interests, rather, they are almost always acting solely for their own. Sometimes, however, their "hot-story" interests intermingle with our own.

In this particular case, I do think that the past should be fair game to the public, but it's difficult to say where to draw the line in all the murkiness. How's that line go - you don't know where you're going if you don't know where you've been, or something like that - I believe this is certainly true of a person's character. Indeed, one's past and current actions have a definitive effect on one's future deeds, so yes I think it is important to know a little bit about one's past, especially if they are running the most powerful country in the world.

But overall, yes I do think that there should be limits as to how far we can peak into a politician's private life and past. And again I will restate that, overall, Bush's or Kerry's war history is a non-issue, esp. when we have real current issues that need addressed.

But hey, I started the damn argument, I intend to finish it.:toothless

Which always brings out the crabby partisan side of me.:D

Ehh, oh well, I have my days. I thought I was doin' good there for a while - coming fairly close to the moderate left. Mr. Hyde got the best of me.:whip:

I was in Chicago over the weekend. One of the greatest cities in this country if only it weren't for the winter weather!
