Okay, let me elaborate..

I just don't feel that Kerry [upon returning from Vietnam, preforming his american duty in an active military position] denouncing the war as being unjust is the greater evil.

Sorry for being a little childish with my posting, my frustrations with these "excuses" regarding bush's records disappearing has this kettle steaming fast..

And before you start screaming the honest mistake BS, explain to me where his hard records are (you know, the ones that the microfiche images were made from). I'll give you a hint... They're supposed to be in the Texas Air National Guard's headquarters. There are other military records from that same period there... but not Dubya's;)

But that can probably be explained as some form of accident as well.

But what the heck, Bush’s supporters respond that the man did at least he ‘serve his country’ in the Air Guard. Or did he? Questions have been raised over the years about whether the younger George, having nailed the cushy pilot seat, failed to report for duty. On camera, I spoke with Texas cattle rancher Bill Burkett, formerly a Lieutenant Colonel in the air guard. Seems that Burkett was in the office of the Guard’s Adjutant General when a call came in from then-Governor George W. Bush’s office. As is normal procedure, the call was put on the speaker box, but the request was not so normal. The Governor’s office was sending over an official biographer … and the Governor’s minions wanted to make sure the files did not contain not-so-heroic info. Burkett told me:

“I was in the General’s office, General Daniel James …. He gets a telephone call from Joe Albaugh, who was the Governor’s chief of staff, and Dan Bartlett … on the voice box … and they wanted General James to assemble all of the Governor’s files, that [Karen Hughes, Bush’s aide] was going to write a book…. But Joe told General James, ‘Make sure there’s not anything in there that’ll embarrass the Governor.’”

And there wouldn’t be. Burkett asked if the general’s staff really intended to purge the files; and sure enough, as evidence of the affirmative reply, he was shown the piles of pay and pension records in the garbage pails destined for the shredders. Colonel Burkett did not run off with those files so we can only conclude this: the only evidence that Bush showed up for duty during the war is now missing. Military pay records are public records – and now they are conveniently unavailable.

By the way, the White House, where Messrs. Albaugh, Bartlett and, of course, Mr. Bush, work, turned down BBC’s offer to deny the charges of the draft-dodge fix and the purging of Dubya’s files.

Earlier in the forum, we were enlightened: "yet Cheney has no political experience except for his vice presidency and he's got that heart condition. As if he could take over"

yep, no political experience except for vice president of the united states

oh wait! he also worked in the office of economic opportunity, and ford's deputy assitant, white house cheif of staff, wyoming congressman (re-elected 5 times), and secretary of defense

good call.

That sky has fallen! The sun rose from the west! Let it be known and duly noted, because this will probably never happen again......I am agreeing with Shakka for the first and probably the last time  :eyespop: ;)

By law, a copy of Bush's records, esp. the ones that were "accidentally" destroyed, are kept in the Texas State Library and Archives Commission in Austin. Bush, however, refuses to release those copies, so the AP is on his ass for this.

Why is he not releasing those records?

AP Sues for Bush Guard Records

By Pete Yost, Associated Press Writer

Published: June 22, 2004

WASHINGTON (AP) The Associated Press sued the Pentagon and the Air Force on Tuesday, seeking access to all records of George W. Bush's military service during the Vietnam War.

Filed in federal court in New York, where the AP is headquartered, the lawsuit seeks access to a copy of Bush's microfilmed personnel file from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission in Austin.

The White House says the government has already released all the records of Bush's military service.

Controversy surrounds Bush's time in the Texas Air National Guard because it is unclear from the record what duties he performed for the military when he was working on the political campaign of a U.S. Senate candidate in Alabama.

There are questions as to whether the file provided to the news media earlier this year is complete, says the lawsuit, adding that these questions could possibly be answered by reviewing a copy of the microfilm of Bush's personnel file in the Texas archives.

The Air National Guard of the United States, a federal entity, has control of the microfilm, which should be disclosed in its entirety under the Freedom of Information Act, the lawsuit says.

The White House has yet to respond to a request by the AP in April asking the president to sign a written waiver of his right to keep records of his military service confidential. Bush gave an oral waiver in a TV appearance that preceded the White House's release this year of materials concerning his National Guard service.

The government "did not expedite their response ... they did not produce the file within the time required by law, and they will not now estimate when the file might be produced or even confirm that an effort has been initiated to retrieve a copy from the microfilm at the Texas archives," the lawsuit says.

In the absence of any privacy objection by the president and in light of the importance of the file's release in advance of the November election, says the lawsuit, AP seeks a court order to compel the release of records "that are being unlawfully withheld from the public."

The released records were from the Texas Air National Guard at Camp Mabry and the Defense Financing Accounting Service in Denver.

Under Texas law, a copy of military personnel files of those serving in the Texas Air National Guard must be retained on microfilm at the Texas archives.

The lawsuit says that no one has looked at any of the Texas Air National Guard records maintained at the state archives since 1996.

Responding to the AP's request, the Texas Air National Guard concluded that Bush's file was a federal record under control of the U.S. Air National Guard.

When the government did not produce the documents, AP appealed to the Pentagon, saying that by law, the microfilm copy should have been produced within 20 days. The Pentagon said it could not respond within the legally required period.

The records have been released. The missing microfilm documents have been found. Previous misplacement was due to a cataloging error, where the documents were believed to have been in a set that was destroyed.

Here they are: http://www.nationalreview.com/york/bush3.pdf

Bush's Military Records Fail to Dispel AWOL Charges

By Adam Entous
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Some of President Bush's missing Air National Guard records during the Vietnam War years, previously said to be destroyed, turned up on Friday but offered no new evidence to dispel charges by Democrats that he was absent without leave.

His whereabouts during his service as a pilot in the Texas Air National Guard in the United States during the Vietnam War have become an election-year issue. Bush's Democratic presidential challenger, John Kerry, is a decorated Vietnam War veteran.

-snip

Bush was the son of a U.S. congressman at a time when National Guard service was seen as a way for the privileged to avoid being drafted for Vietnam War duty.

Poor little AWOL.

IMO, this election is absolutely horrible. I don't think America is safe with either man being elected. I agree, however. I'm going to be the exact same way with Kerry as I am with Bush. The only way to make an educated vote is to know all possible information on BOTH runners, AND their VP's.

Hopefully your man Edwards will be pres someday.

He strikes me as a regular guy instead of an aristocrat like Bush and Kerry.

I'd rather have him than Hillary,:nervous: but still at least she can form coherent phrases.
