I don't claim to be privy to the details concerning booking fees etc.. but to put things in perspective a bit, the following 4 techno headliners could be booked for about $10,000 (+flights etc):
Ben Sims (UK)
Chris Liebing (Germany)
Danilo Vigorito (Italy)
Cari Lekebusch (Sweden)

I'm not suggesting that one only loses money booking smaller djs, so they cost less, but don't forget to account for lost revenue in ticket sales. |

| I suggest I win the lottery, and then I'd bring in a Techno DJ for you Kate! :D |

kate i was there at that party in toronto with the italian forza...
it was very good, but it was 90% of the people there had no idea who were these guys. just djs from italia... it was packed and alcohol was flowing ($$$). the sound system was crap.
what am trying to say that if you put all these guys (except picotto) you can hardly fill an afterhour, crazy hours, no booze, ... :( |

What about last year's halloween party , Christian Smith (SE), Marco Carola (IT), Danilo Vigorito (IT), Yaz, the place was rammed. |

I don't doubt it was a bit unorthodox.. (Forza) and it's not that I necessarily think it would be *successful*, but the point I am getting at, is that there are OPTIONS!
all those 4 guys were in Toronto one night after the WMC.. it's a lot more manageable and feasible to book them in collaboration with Blue Bookings in this case.. when else do you get that chance.. not too often they all are on this side of the pond, a few hours from us. That's all I meant.
As for Picotto... well.. *part* of the reason he is a bigger draw here, (and I'm not talking about DJ Mag top 100 crap) is that he has been booked 4 times in the past 18 months!! Obviously there are other factors also.. but I see a connection there. ;) |

Oh and Greg..
you win the lottery, save your pennies on a party here and fly me to a REAL techno party in Europe instead... no shortage of killer lineups there. :tongue3 |

well well
i finnaly had the courage to read this thread
i got to agree that we often see same dj's
but...imo in north america there isnt really (maybe im wrong) clubs that brings a dream line up packed with diversity evry week
exectp maybe some big clubs in usa
but im still happy i can ear world famous dj known for their talent...and some for their name
i wouldn say cream lineup SUCks
if you only like techno well maybe its not the best night to go to
but damn im sure it will be one hell of a party
just like beb seemed to be....there was only dj's that weve seen in the past months..but still...evryone was talking about beb like if it was the best party ever
imo cream lineup is even better so i guess it will be one hell of a party too!:D

The difference between BEB, and CREAM, is BEB had two different rooms, and CREAM is one large area. If a DJ was playing that you didn't want to hear in one room, you could move over to the other, while at CREAM, you won't have that option. |

i've been thinking for a while on how to answer to this topic created byt kate ( btw .. great topic ) and sre is what i have to say ( sorry if i offend anyone for once ... it's no what i wanna do )
First off there is a difference between when sona was open and now. The major difference is that there was only one after at that time .. so basically sona coul book anyone they wanted since either way the club would be packed every frigging night ! ! Then dj cost a lot less in those times, superstar dj would charge more thn half what big dj's charge now ... they could afford to book a lot more dj's that way. Then ... the scene was relativilly new ... so everything was a discovery.
There is also the factor that there is now 4 after hour clubs in montreal all going for the same crowd so the clubs aren't always pacted ... and the only was to be sure that the club is pacted is to book the dj's that u know will pack your club. There needs to be at least another after hours that closes down in the next moths ... or else forget diversity !
Then .. there is the thing that i think that is the worse for diversity ( at least at aria ) is that they did not showcase our montreal talent enough. I mean by that that people don't go out to see resident dj's playing .. they rather wait for the next big thing to come. Once again the clubs aren't packed and let's be honest who wants to go to a half empty club.
But then ... i think that diversity shouldn't be brought by the big clubs. I think that there's a LOT of diversified music in this town ( montreal ) to please everybody here, there are tons of house/techno/prog/electro nights in montreal that, on a regular basis bring new talents ... those are the reals educator for the scene .. and those are the nights that we all should be going !!
I now rest my case !
