i think hes really refering to commercial trance with this thread not cheesy music there two different things and people seem to get em mixed up
commercial trance = probably what is the downfall of trance all these nightclubs that r about full of people every week that will probably never even step foot in a proper trance club in there lifes or see a professional dj
cheesy music = well this just a matter of opinion whats cheesy simple |

What is damaging EDM and trance is not cheese but bad dj's!!!
For example....Tiesto comes to Chicago a month ago and many people from the city and the midwest made an effort to see him live to understand what is trance, why is he #1, what is edm , etc. But his performace that night was anything but trance or EDM. This imo damaged the understanding of trance or edm to those poor sould came that night as virgins ready to be "mind ed" by the "king of trance". |
The vast majority of people who are coming to see Tiesto shows could care less about his technical ability behind the decks. They are there to see the mainstream commercial appeal of the "World's #1 DJ." A large percentage of his 'fans' have only been listening for a limited amount of time and would have absolutely no recollection of his Trance Energy 2000 set, or his 2001 EM. They know what they know from Nyana and from Just Be. That set was exactly those two mashed together - weak mixing and Tiesto's productions.
| quote: | | Next example...Paul Van Dyk. His production work is imo the beuatiful and many colored sides of trance. However, again PVD's performces do not constantly provided "newbies" the opportunity to understand or get exposed to EDM. |
Paul van Dyk has stated several times he does not play trance. He does not play to cater to a crowd or to bring people to the scene with fluffy melodic, crap anthem trance. Paul is smart enough to realize that he has built a following of dedicated EDM listeners who have respected him over the years for his ingenuity, his production efforts, and his amazing sets. He has no responsibility to introduce "newbies" to the scene.
| quote: | | The probelm is that when these dj get so close to tip the scale to get people to really begin to enjoy EDM they up. Either they start doing drugs ( Paul Oakenfold..maybe Tiesto:nervous: ) |
That's just asinine.
| quote: | | they dont care and lose passion , or they start trying to rediscover themselves through new sounds when they should have been improving and continuing on expanding the sound they created. For example, you never heard Mozart begin to "experiment". He was very consistent but constently improving. |
You must not realize how contradictory this entire statement is. They are supposed to expand on the sound they created without 'rediscovering themselves through new sounds?' What, are they supposed to recycle the same hi hats, synths, drum patterns and basslines over and over ad nauseum? Part of experimentation and moving forward is changing your style, adapting to a rapidly developing genre of music. There comes a point as an artist where you gain enough success that you are allowed the freedom to experiment and look at new sounds, and by all means they should be allowed to do it.
| quote: | | Praise the DJ when create the scene BUT also Blame the DJ when they ruin it. Its ulitmetly the DJ who drops the records and plays the songs. Its the DJ who stands in front of thousands of fans and listeners each night and creates an opinion of EDM for them. |
So, you're saying that the big name DJs have a responsibility to play anthemic, cheesy, ty-vocaled trance to appeal to the masses?
I disagree. |

| UWM your a smart man. your posts have made me think. I am interested to know what you listen to, what dj's do you like, and which dj's would you recommend or cd s do you like? |

| I mainly listen now to progressive house and tech-house, but as most people did I started on trance. I am most akin to sets by Sander Kleinenberg, Sasha, Dave Seaman, etc ... but I still enjoy going out and seeing Tiesto / Armin / PvD for the atmosphere alone, and just to see their progression in person. |
|

| anything specific about trance that led you away from it? I also love progressive ( have all those dj's you named on cd) but imo I have to be in "chiil out" mood to enjoy it. I just find trance to be more energic. I kinda bounce back and forth between the two depending on my mood. What would you recommend for more energic/emotional progressive?? |
|
|
| beats and beeps |
| Im sure this has already been said by someone else, but cheese gets so many people interested in edm. A few are turned off from edm by "cheese", but im absolutely positive that there is wayyy more people who are brought into the scene by cheese. So, no cheese has not, or isnt destroying the trance scene, its doing alot more good than it is bad. |

Hey you two guys. DaveBiaza and UWM. You two, i can give respect to you. You couldn't disagree more together than I agree your with opinions.
Tiesto comes to Helsinki, to show how he spins.
I love trance, i allmost forced my friends listen Trance. I've talked about tiesto, all about those good tracks when i started to listen tiesto. Energy @ 2000, Tiesto-Sparkles (magikal remake), Rank 1 - Airwave (That tiestos mix, can't remember), Destination sunshine (tiesto power mix) etc. Those where the best tracks when i started. And Blank & Jones - Dj's, Fans and Freaks was great too =D
And now, finally after way too long time, Tiesto comes to town. And whatta f**k, Just Be, Love comes again etc. I allmost hated it. And what about my friends, they've listened my preaching about "damn excellent upliftin trance that makes you happy. You must love that stuff" And then *paf* Adagio for Strings. Come on, everyone cry's. Maybe because it is an excellent track (i think so) or maybe because William Orbet - Barber's Adagio for String's and (Ferry Corsten mix) are way better than Tiesto's one. So it's kinda 50%/50%
PvD Rocks =D
""The probelm is that when these dj get so close to tip the scale to get people to really begin to enjoy EDM they up. Either they start doing drugs ( Paul Oakenfold..maybe Tiesto ) ""
// Way too difficult english/// =D DO NOT USE DRUGS!
I've allways believed that starting to like trance begins with Cheese/easy to listen kinda trance. Like Mr Dj Sammy [he's good :)]
And slowly Dj Sammy start's to sound boring. Hmmm, if you get lucky or have good "contacts" you might fing better trance. Like example Nu Nrg, those two brilliant guys. After Sammy, start listen older tunnel Trance,Dj Dean, Dj Tiesto, PvD, AvB. After that try Nu Nrg, if you are lucky you will like it alot, then you like the same music as i like. If not, you can still find your own sound of trance that you like as much i love mine.
Trance keeps evolving to more better and pure sounding like tracks, you have to try to keep up in the progress and maybe if you are lucky find your own sound and way of trance, and people surely will like it. |
