It cost alot more money to put someone to death, then lock then up forever. Let them rot in jail the rest of their life.

Yeah.. but if you just lock them up they have chance of parole eventually when they will get released and just do it again

I don't think that's fair to say... dangerous offenders can be held indefinitely in jail... and it's not as easy as you make it sound to be to get paroled for the types of crimes that you are suggesting. If you have any stats from reliable sources that show a significant number of dangerous offenders who get parole easily and repeat their crimes, I'd like to see them. This article says most dangerous offenders do not get parole and end up dying in jail: http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Canada/.../462257-cp.html

(actually, studies have shown that it is more expensive to execute a prisoner than it is to keep them in jail for life.)

I'm interested to know what studies you are talking about, because this does not make sense to me... do you have any links?

finding "unbiased" sources is always challenging...but a quick google search yields:

http://www.cpa.ca/ogloff.htm

"Some of those who support the death penalty defend it as a cost-effective alternative to life imprisonment. However, it may be more costly to execute an inmate than to have that person serve a life sentence (Amnesty International, 1987). A 1982 study in New York concluded that the average capital murder trial and the first stage of appeals costs U.S. tax-payers 1.8 million dollars (Bohm, 1987). It is estimated that this is less than it would cost to incarcerate someone for one hundred years. Other sources estimate that it can cost up to 2.2 million dollars to obtain and carry out a death sentence (Johnson, 1990). The principal factor in this cost is the appeals process, which lasts an average of 10 years and is deemed necessary to reduce the likelihood of the execution of innocent persons (Johnson, 1990)."

I'm sure the government has enough money to spend. who cares about the money issues.. the ISSUE here is to get rid of them so it doesn't happen again. I don't care how much it costs. I know people get life sentences and die in jail from old age.. but a lot of people get parole too.

Who here thinks that Canada should bring back the death penalty?

What forms the basis of such a question/decision? Your own experience? I think not.

In most cases, you've chosen to accept someone else's decision. Very few of your daily decisions about what’s "right" and "wrong" are being made by you.

If you support the death penalty, then what you’re saying is…"Someone else just tell me what's right and wrong!" . . . Because, you see, it eliminates the need for me to think. . .

FYI, it is when you act on the authority of others that you get yourself into trouble. . . . Should societies use killing as a response to those who violate behavioural codes? . . . Is there a difference between killing and murder? . . .
Society would have you believe that killing to punish those who commit certain offences is perfectly defensible. In fact, society must have you take its word for it in order to exist as an entity of power. . . .but, there is no "right" or "wrong" in these matters. Yet by your decisions you paint a portrait of Who You Are. . . .And that scares me. It scares me to know how blood thirsty you are.

IMO, it's time to rethink the growing use of the death penalty. The idea of using of violence to combat violence seems to posses an inherent contradiction. Is contributing to the use of violence the best way to solve violent problems, or could our efforts be put to better use finding ways to end violence of all kinds?
To me, the Death Penalty is a barbaric practice and to reinstate it as a legal alternative is a Draconian setback in law.

As Canadian’s (often regarded as humanitarians) we need to be more responsible and accountable for our actions without sinking to injustice. …Unless you are the hand of God, I don’t think it is your right to decide who lives or dies (regardless of the crime).

Far too many in Canada and the U.S. are innocently convicted of crimes they did not commit. More often NOW, people are convicted because…

1. There was withholding of exculpatory evidence
2. There was an overzealous Crown
3. The police had tunnel vision
mostly it’s:
• Erroneous Eyewitness Identification
• False Confession
• False Informant
• Official Misconduct
• Rigid Thinking
Please click http://www.dredmundhiggins.com/ and read the database of wrongful convictions in the U.S. (now think about those in Canada—>G.P. Morin, D.Milgaard, C.Johnson, T. Sophonow, G.Parsons, Nguyen Thi Hiep etc, etc,).

Maybe if you donated some time to AIDWYC (Association in Defence of the Wrongly Convicted), you would get a better understanding of how wrong it would be for Canada to reinstate the Death Penalty. ...and how wrong chopping off the hands is.

Furthermore, those that think DNA should not be relied on...shall I assume you also support suppressing DNA? Was it not enough when Bush intro’d a precedent law in Texas to suppress DNA testing for those in death Row. Is that what you want in Canada? Do you want us to be regarded as vindictive, blood thirsty barbarians by our American neighbours? Think about this guys. Think real hard.
