XP-SP2 release has only been released to beta and manufacturers (as of Monday Aug 9).

XP-SP2 has not seen public release (yet).

If you use XP and are not a power user - go to this link and follow the instructions and when MS is ready to release public SP2 you'll be setup to get it automatically.

;)

A 4 or 5 day article saying it will be today??? I'll believe the end-user updates when I see it. XP-SP2 was supposed to have public release 2 weeks ago.

Apparently a bunch of the manufacturers are avoiding the install (IBM, Compaq) due to undisclosed issues. (probably more politics than anything...)

End-user update is apparently ~80 MB in size - so when anybody notices it (through auto-update) let me know - this is crucial for my business to know when it the updates begin.

Gracias.

its believed the issues you are reffering to are related (but not limited) to compatibility issues with AntiVirus software and other OS dependant software-tools.

I've been running the SP2 Rc0 for almost a month and its been a smooth ride...

In your opinion - top 3 new features as an end-user???
malek
i'm a bit more than end user ;)

but

i'll play along:

1-pop up blocker
2-malicious code blocker
3-warning that an exe is not signed (not really new) but now used thoroughly.

annoyances:

1- firewall, you turn it on, and your msn file transfer get slower than a 56k
2-malicious code blocker... yeah sometimes those sites send you some valid code (the coders will have to fall back on some simpler technologies).
3-being asked to permit or block cookies so very often it becomes annoying.

sp2 packs way more features than this, but they are mostly invisible to the end users ;)

while we're on the topic of windows, has anyone tried the windows xp 64 version for 64-bit processors like the Athlon 64? I am upgrading soon to an Athlon 64, and was wondering if i should try it out.

wondering how well it would run 32-bit applications, and if anything would be optimized to take advantage of the 64-bit cpu.

suggestions/comments?

i think that the only windows version that is 64 bit so far is the windows 2004 server. i may be wrong tho.

Linux my friend is the solution ;)
