Has it ever occurred to anyone that Bush’s stumbling oratorical style may be just an act? I heard a report a couple months ago comparing the debating styles of Kerry and Bush. They played a bit of Bush debating Ann Richards when he ran for governor of Texas. He sounded like a different person – none of those awkward pauses. Of course, that was just one soundbite. They contrasted this with that uncomfortable press conference moment earlier this year in which he said something like, “I wish I could have gotten that question ahead of time.” It was interesting to hear the analyst’s explanations for these two styles – one was that Bush purposely pauses. I can see how this might make him seem more “real” compared to the smooth talking of the Clinton legacy.
Personally, I often cringe when I hear Bush speak. I feel like I’m holding my breath, waiting for him to spit the words out. I wonder, “How can this man be representing America to the rest of the world?” It’s embarrassing. But what REALLY bothers me is this “compassionate conservatism” thing…
Now I have to get back to being completely self absorbed ;) |
