Going more prog? (pg. 3)

it's evolving tastes. i mean i been listening to trance since 1998. and every1 will admit trance peaked in 2000-2001 imho, and has gone down hill since. prog on the other hand is a bit refreshing from the hands in the air anthems that every1 been tryin to copy for the past 7 years. u guys say progressive has a formula, try uplifting trance. i mean come on, thats so much more formula based then any prog tune out there. sure every1s trying to make the next luke chable track etc with all that bleepy stuff which isnt bad in moderation, but theres deeper more complex stuff then that, which is something trance lacks.

I do agree that prog can tell a story and create an atmosphere, but i also agree if you drop trance or techy stuff you can do the same, its alllllll about programming

What defines progressive? I really donīt have a clue, maybe someone could give me a few examples of typical progressive tracks...tracks can say more than 1000 words ;)

Oh let's see:

* The incredibly pathetic attitude that so many of its fans adopt

* The fact that the name is incredibly misleading, since so many releases don't come anywhere near "progressing"

* The overwhelming, mind-numbing dullness of its sound when not done right

* That it is being slapped on dumbed down and watered out trance records in a desperate attempt to avoid the trance label

and so on.

I've always been a big fan of pure uplifting trance, but I've also always liked prog too, especially the way it can be used to create sets that really flow and take you on a journey rather than just being full on euphoria from the word go. Prog also seems to be a much more mature form of music, and far less 'cheesy'.
So I guess thats why I'm currently loving prog trance so much. It's the best of both worlds. It has the uplifting euphoric elements, but at the same time its more mature and you can really create a good flowing set with it.

You know I read this post and just thought this sums up my point of view exactly.
Seem to be more into guys like Probspot, Benz & MD, Dekay etc this year, combining those awesome housey bassline with infectious melodies giving the best of both worlds. Still love uplifting trance but I haven't seen a lot of great releases this year.
Prog breaks too...love it. Chable for PM!

I am getting tired of these stupid threads full of hate.

Obviously we all like EDM.

Like it had been said many times before, because human life is so varied it would make sense that we (EDM listeners ) all hope to attain a music that can fit our complex emtional expereinces. It is impossiable to find one "genre" of music to fulfill this human need. the solution is to move beyond the class specific identifcation of EDM and move into a larger denfition such as the term "EDM" in order to fully grasp the spectrum of music and the phases of human expereince.

Also if you really want music to communicate to you than you really need to stop soley listening to the radio and other djs in the hope that the music they play will "touch you" or will help you define a specifc edm genre. YOU really need to dig and find music around EDM that really inspires and defines YOU. YOU can define a genre NOT the opposite.

For example follow this common mistake in thinking in EDM listeners.

[fill in the blank] DJ plays trance in his mix sets. I heard his mix sets and they suck. thus trance to me sucks.I hate trace cuz [fill in the blank] dj plays this type of music.

^^^^^^ WRONG!

THE DJ sucks not the music. The DJ is picking ty trance songs that he thinks are good but you think suck. The DJ has differnt experinces and meaning to waht trance should sound like, thus he picked these ty tunes. He sucks not trance.

Solution you find trance tunes you like not EXPECT other djs and radio stations to introduce you to it.

( I persoanlly thought prog. was boring and repettitive. Why? becuase I would hear other djs play ty prog tunes. than one day I went to the record store and dug around and listened to crates and crates of prog. tunes until I finally found a "prog. sound" that I said " this defines me , this is what I want prog. to be, this is the emotion and feeling I want from prog." From that day I began to listen and enjoy MY PROG. MUSIC. Its not like I than started to like those ty djs,; no I still think they suck. Its jsut that I found another genre of EDM that I like.

This is the truely unique and inspiring aspect of EDM. IT can be shaped and molded to your personal tastes. The artists and labels are out there you just have to look for them. IMO edm has an inhert culutre with record stores, labels, djs, internet radio ,online stores, etc. which push for this individual journey acorss EDM to take place. Let me be honest with you, downloading isnt going to work if you want to really expereince edm. go work and spend some money on good tunes you like. support YOUR artists, support YOUR label, support YOUR music.

the opening thread alluded to the progession of muscial taste, I however beleive that it is not the progression of musical taste but the progession of ones mind and way of thinking. It is the stage when indiviuality and persoanl choice become apperant as seen in their selection of music.

My personal preference of music is epic/uplifting/tech trance. I enjoy prog for listening, but as far as the genre i spin, its Trance. One thing ive noticed over the course of the year that ive been spinning is that alot of DJs are switching to prog, and alot of current DJs are prog (Markus, Perry etc.) Even i have gotten about 10 prog records in my crate lately, im just wondering, what happened to Pure Trance, it seems like its fading. Can Someone please answer my question about why alot are going more prog, and why trance seems to be fading, compared to the latest prog. releases

The trance scene has been absolute trash over the past 2 years... only a couple of good trance records have come out ie White Room- White Room; Paul Van Dyk's set at Ultra 5 was the last gasp of good uplifting trance, not that it can't come back- it just hasn't.

The prog scene on the other hand has been outstanding, thus it's success.

Yea indeed, the trance scene just hasn't produced enough great tracks to satisfy my craving. I find i can listen to any type of GOA for example and will listen to it even if it's not that great, i just like the sound. On the other hand I have to really like a trance or prog song but if i do find one i like it really makes me happy. The prog scene has just been turning out some really interesting melodic stuff lately.
