To retire all dj's? |
I just find it ironic about the trance culture in general.
But, in particular, when someone starts making this much money for just playing and mixing records, this is a question that inevitably comes to mind.
Don't flame me, I love trance and DJ's, I just felt like saying it. Yeah, Oakenfold remixes some stuff and he adds "art" to the music (whatever that means). But when his ego takes over and he starts behaving like he's the Messiah and he's here to change the face of music in America and he's all this and that, I roll my eyes in sarcasm. |

Stop living in the past. He used to be good back in the day. Playing the same uninspiring & unimaginative stale 2 hour set in America makes him a bad DJ. Generally most Oakie fans are newbies. |
Well i saw him live @ club space and he played the BEST SET I EVA heard.........you can ask ABTsportsline where eva he went... |

I think it all depends on what musik you like really. I know a friend of mine saw him when he came to Perth recently [In the Land of Oz] and said he was amazing. Unbelievable. And the reviews in the local magazines were equally positive.
On the same token i've heard some bad things about him -- mediocre sets, being drunk, etc so i don't really know. I personally think he's a tad overrated, in fact (i'll probably get ripped for this] i think most DJ's are. (please don't hate me.. :) ) |

see i dunno im not a big fan of Oakies but hes not terrable but he is overrated....... if u are a Dj and are a good one u can see that Oakies mixing isnt all that superb... i dont remember what cd but one of his GU the last mix was not that good his symbol alignment was off..and this is on a CD which they have like edits and stuff..but anyway ...hes just a dj that plays Trendy tunes..wheather its house, trance or progressive.... and his name is always the first to pop up to the trance newbies.... and he is in the US the most more then any other UK/european dj so i guess thats why so many people like him here in the US.....im Germany where im normally from Oakenfold is a name that no one really is familar with....hes just a very trendy dj which u find out hes not as good as people say he is ...so thats why so many people like them are newbies or like his older stuff...but many who dont like him are advit trance listeners.... i know many people who loved oakie when they first started listening to trance ...its cuz hes was the biggest name for the us trance genereation and so they are used to him...but many who become djs or understand the whole scene better they find out that hes not as good as people say he is!
one thing also is that i dont think hes that Charasmatic behond the tables and his personality in general like someone like TIESTO who has probably the best personality of all djs or PVD who is kinda shy ..but personality brings a role on the crowd as well.... |

| Tranceclubber: I totally agree. Many ppl I know started out listening to Oakie but as time goes on & u hear other DJ's ur tastes change. Oakie is like pot, a gateway to other DJ's. My gripe is that he plays old tunes & recycles the same songs all the time. |

It was overly dramatic & drawn out. He played a couple of tribal tunes then dropped Rapture. He played Dooms Night(Timo Maas remix)  (yawn) then U2's -Where the streets have no names(orignal, not a remix). The Europeans went beserk, singing along. Then a very akward choppy mix into that hybrid 'Ubik/Hide U' white label. He played an oldie but goodie Amoeba Assassin- Piledriver (Andy's Grayed out summer mix):D. I was very content I neva heard that out before. Played Huge Ibiza tune Xpress 2- Smoke Machine. He was predictably weak, mediocre track selection. I had hoped & expected a better set considering it was a CLOSING PARTY IN IBIZA! I was NOT impressed, it was downright boring at times.
Daniele Davoli came on at 5:30 & closed it out. He was MUCH better. He played Urban Train, Sonorous- Glass Garden :D, Radiohead- Everything in its right place(Hybrid remix), Ibiza Anthem Chemical Brothers- Africa, Utah Saints- Lost Vagueness (Oliver lieb remix) Felix Da House Cat- Silver Screen Shower Scene, Ogenki Clinic- First Light :D, 3 drives on Vinyl- Sunset in Ibiza.
My argument still stands that Oakie is overrated. 27 Days in Ibiza I saw/heard practically every DJ excluding Tiesto & AVB. :( John 00 Flemming & Picotto played the best sets. |
You don't know Twilogoddess. Cut the bull. |

I have to agree with TG on this one. Oakie had his time...2 yrs ago he was smashing...but now I dunno...I heard him in mid August and he spun for only 2 hours...which was sad in itself but then instead of packing that two hours full of great ass kicking tunes...he proceeded with(not in this order) faithless-we come one....ppk-resurection....dido-here with me (JV remix)....iio aka vaiio-rapture (which he proceeded to play twice in a row..prolly a mixing blunder)....kosheen-hide you(john creamer and stephanie k remix)...all good tunes mind you, but by mid August...they were all played out. If that was the best Oakie had to bring to NYC then that's sad. From my understanding before spinning at World this August Oakie hadn't been back here in almost a year. I recall he played at Roseland august of 2000 with Sandra Collins...who my ex told me was better then Oakie at that venue. It's not like TG is jumping on some Oakie hating bandwagon...she's got real reasons for not liking him and proof to back it up. If you like Oakie...good...if you dont...good too...but I have yet to see anyone who has said he played a smashing set to actually name the tracks he ripped up....b/c maybe you don't follow the musik that much...maybe you don't expect a DJ such as Oakie who has the ability to have any record he wants to spin new musik...not old...even Oakie's newest live set Ive found on the net...it's got old stuff...
here :Oakie live from Moscow:
Tracklist:
01. Blackwatch - Foreshadow
02. Nat Monday - Waiting
03. Moby - Southside (Remix)

07. Da Hool - Meet Her At The Love Parade (Peter
Heller Remix)

| Thx for backing me up Twilochik. :) He's still playing Rendevous?! It's a classic but Oakie needs to learn when to retire a track. Playing the same & old tunes is not acceptable. I suspose some ppl don't mind paying $40 to hear Seven Cities & Dooms night. Personally, every time I see a DJ its like a concert for me. I'm paying good $ to hear upfront tunes meshed with classics in there depending on how long the set is. When PVD plays for 8 hours its ok to drop a few classics but when u *only* play for 2 hours & play anthems its lazy & insulting. Oakie is a crowd pleaser & not a risk taker. It's very easy to relie on anthems...they're a sure thing, but its the easy way out. Like Twilochik said if u have 2 hours u bang it out like Pvd did at Avalon ,Boston 8-10. |
