Well this would definitely make Skipper happy...or whoever I was having this discussion with, although this is in the states so far...
| quote: | Bill Would Ban 'Junk Food' From Schools
TRENTON, N.J. - "Junk food" from candy bars to soda would be prohibited from all public elementary and middle schools in the state under legislation approved by an Assembly committee Monday.
The bill would ban the sale of foods that are defined as having minimal nutritional value by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (news - web sites) from being sold until 30 minutes after the end of the school day.
Schools would only be allowed to have vending machines that sell whole grain foods, juice, water, milk and similar products available during the school day.
"Public schools need to be a place where both healthy minds and bodies are created," said Assemblyman Craig Stanley, D-Essex, a co-sponsor of the bill. "Sugary, fat-laden foods have no place in our schools."
Candy bars, chewing gum and anything else that is made up of 35 percent sugar or contains more than 8 grams of fat would be banned from school cafeterias. Items that are home-baked and sold for fund-raising purposes would be exempt.
Bill sponsors said the measure would help stop obesity in children. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (news - web sites) said the obesity rate for children and adolescents has more than doubled in the last 30 years.
The bill passed by the Assembly Education Committee now goes to the Assembly speaker for consideration for a floor vote. |

| But does that mean they should ban it? Does that mean it should be illegal? |

an unfortunately necessary step...given the ignorance and laziness of parents.
better health, nutrition, and fitness education would be even better though.
health & phys. ed. should be manadatory throughout school every year and treated just as seriously as any other "real" subject.

As long as the gov't is taxing me to pay for these kid's obesity related illness - yes - it should be banned from schools. |

What bull. All that will happen is that these kids will go next door to buy their junkfood. The sports programmes that rely on vending machines will suffer. I bet every convenience store and mcdonalds owner within the vacinity of a school in that state is rejoicing at this news.
You can't legislate common sense.
As for the comment that "if im going to pay for their obesity then they should ban it." Well let's ban you from having sex because i'll be damned if i have to pay for your "preventable" STD.
Think about it.....
PS: To the swede. I miss the variety of yoghurt drinks that were available in Sweden.... mmmmmmmmm |

Perhaps your polygamous ass will have warts - but my monogamous ass will be fine thank you (and at no cost to you either).
Further your argument doesn't work due to the fact the gov't isn't encouraging people to get STDs (in fact quite the contrary).
Having this type of food in schools tells kids (in a round about way) it's “ok” (gov't accepted and approved) - which contradicts the gov't's heal care message. Take the food out, have some homogeny in the message and maybe kids will consider twice before they eat a "super mega-size chunky kit kat" as a snack.
What is being suggested here is simply adding some congruency to the effort by having the message agree with what is actually being done. How can one seriously disagree with the gov’t adding more clarity and congruency to their health care message?
Now if you want to debate the fact that candies in school make kids fatter than candies in schools without – fine, but that isn’t the argument that gov’t is making.
The argument the gov’t is making is: it is wrong to tell people (children) to eat healthy, while at the time selling them unhealthy products in gov't institutions.
Jay – it’s called harmonizing policy and action. |

| give them choice like in the real world. Offer both junk and healthy alternatives, Educate them, and from that point on it's their choice. You cant force healthy food down anyone's throat and the only thing that will be acheived here is robbing the sports programmes of much needed cash. I'm sick of politically correct bull like this that does more harm than good. |
