Coping with Ignorant People

ANECDOTE:
My girlfriend was in law class the other day (she's quite an expert on law... prolly the most knowledgeable one in her class), and they were in a debate, and one of the s in her class apparently was really rotten and nasty to her and insulted her (instead of giving a good counter-argument.)
Anyways, she came to me tonight, really pissed at these people, and said she wanted to drop the course... not because she can't do the material (on the contrary, she's good at this stuff), but because the people in here class are ignorant, flaming s that can't carry on a civilized debate. She doesn't need the course, but it'd probably improve her marks to keep it.
END ANECDOTE
Anyways, her story reminded me immediately of some of the flaming idiots on here (not mentioning any names... lol), so I thought I'd ask you guys... how does everyone here deal with people who really are dumbasses but seem to think their opinion is the only one and won't hesitate to insult you to prove it?
What should I tell my girlfriend to do about the morons in her class? Should she just get the hell outta there?

my opinion is, if she quits, they win
the important thing is that the course will help her grades
she shouldn't feel the need to have to defend herself against those types of people anyways, especially if they're not being reasonable.

| I totally feel for her dude...once in a while ( and rarely), I deal with ignorant people in this forum and where I work...All you can do his throw your arms up in the air and just move on...its frustrating but what can you do:( |

how do you know you're not the one being ignorant...saying shes probably the most knowledgable person in the class without knowing anything about the ppl in the class except for what she states to you. i think that is fairly ignorant...don't you think you'd be having just a bit of biased in your comment with her being your boyfriend.
regarding your question assuming you're right with your generalizaion. i think your girlfriend would be a failure in life to drop that class becasue of the ppl in it. Life is full of stupid ppl, if she can't deal with it now, how will she be able to do it later in life. if she hopes to be a lawyer, she prolly won't always be represting the brightest ppl in the world and will have to deal with it. |

that would be the easy way out in my opinion...if your girlfriend realllly doesnt need the class then sure...but hell if itll take her grade up...stick it out...make a mission out of it...unfortunately this will not be the last time she is gonna come up against s like that and you might as well get all the practice you can get right...thats just my thought man...

its funny you right this ...cuz i just received an email that was full of ignorant comments...it was one of those spam mail things that just get sent around...but basically it was that "my name is Joe and i am canadian advertisment...done in 4 other nationalities i guess. Sure the Ad is meant to poke fun in a light-hearted way...but most of the comments made in the "pakistani" segment of the email..didnt even refer to pakistani's...
basically its nothing i should get too mad about but for some reason my patriotism has kicked into high gear and i am extremely insulted. There was a section in the Chinese section that referred to Tianemen (may have spelt it wrong) square that i didnt find to funny either...some of you may have seen this email..some may not have...i dont know why im ranting on here..i dont usually do that and those that read these boards know this.

ignorance is a blessing. I'm just not blessed with enough balls to have it.
it's a way of life more than anything. Some of the smartest people rather be ignorant to get their ways. One of the reasons why people are ignorant simply becuse they want their way and by acting stupid (this is what ignorance really is... acting stupid) they can get their ways. This is EXACTLY what her classmates want. She CAN'T quit just because they're ignorant. She gotta learn how to put uo with those kinda people because sooner or later, she'll be either working for such people or dealing with clients that are ignorant. |

She shouldn't be concerned with anyone but the professor or the TA (the people that give the marks), who cares what others say.
If she was offended by something someone said then they should be kicked out not her have to leave. |

This is just the beginning and will probably see it allot throughout her career. She's gotta learn to be strong. Stronger than anybody there.
I think the next time this guy takes his ignorance to a personal level rather than a civilized debate, your gf should come up with a 1 liner comeback, that will make him look stupid without coming across as a personal insult. Tell her not to lose her cool and do it with class.
Lines like, "with your logic, that will take humanity back 1000 years." or even better ignore his views and counter debate saying things along the lines of refocusing the topic as if the guy has the wrong ideas and pulling the topic in a different direction.
It works like a charm. I do it all the time and always come out looking better than the other person even if they make more sense than me. Its all about delivery. She cant show vulnerability because people will learn those and target them in the future.

The best revenge is massive success.
Grow some thick skin because in the real world (and in her field) she'll probably run into a lot of that.
It's hard not to take things personally in an arguement especially when the other side doesn't know how to and starts throwing insults out or has to yell.
These are the people that are going to have real issues when they're done their course.
Your GF just needs to let them drown in their own ignorance and just smile. :) |
