i dont adore tiesto....but ill still go see him every time hes in town cuz i like the music he plays...same as id do for sasha, lawler, armin and a load of djs..from MANY differnet genres....

Great thread here, Orko makes a good point.

The truth is, there's an inevitable backlash that comes with success. It happens to mainstream artists, and even moreso with dance artists that are viewed as sellouts who don't want to spend spend their careers in obscurity.

Like them or not, Paul Oakenfold and Tiesto have given their contribution to electronic music, they don't owe anybody anything. Besides, any dj that can take this music to stages where more people can hear it (ie. movie soundtracks and Olympic Games) can only help this music and culture grow.

i dont see why paul oakenfold is mentioned along with tiesto....oakenfold actually played a huge role in revolutionizing the scene and is looked up at for that. eys he went commercial off late but hes passed his prime and is jsut keeping image. tiesto however has been VISIBLE in teh scene only since...what?? 97?? oooo woopti do.... he hasnt done much for the industry other than just promote teh same rotation of vinyl all year round.

if i had a chance, id give tiesto the finger again wholeheartedly

Wow, if I weren't mistaken I'd think he killed a member of your family or something... so much angst!!

Actually Tiesto has been a dj for 15 years, he was "around" long before he made it big. Aside from that, like these tracks or not, Silence and 643 ARE contributions to the music along with his 50 something other productions and remixes that are still hammered every week in the clubs by the world's elite.

I'm not a huge Tiesto fan but he's spent the last 5 years producing trance music that has taken it in a new direction completely.
Compare trance of '97 to now and tell me it's the same... look at all the bright young djs coming up now that cite him as an influence... I'd call that a contribution.

Dude, what are you smoking? You're referring to one month-old thread about Tiesto and using that as an example of how we're all on a generic DJ bashing bandwagon? Jesus, talk about jumping to conclusions! I don't think I need to further explain the fallacies present in this argument.

Can you find one example of "bashing" that don't refer to (a) Oakenfold or (b) Tiesto? Did you maybe stop to figure that there might be a legitimate reason for those two being bashed?

I know we've hurt your feelings by putting down your hero(es) but try for a minute to be logical about this. One "rock star" DJ getting cut up on a forum is hardly evidence of what you're suggesting in this thread.

Ah..let me guess, the fallacy of 'slipery slope conclusion'? Well thats the one i saw in my argument; you are right about that. Maybe i did go too far in lumping all TA's together, who bash. Then lets just keep it to Oakenfold and Tiesto.

I dont neccessarily see why these two are sell outs. They both put out artist albums which nobody liked Bunkka, Just Be, for Oakey and Tiesto, respectivly. I thought there were trying to go in different directions. BTW I hated 'Just be'.

They get paid loads of money, but if you ask me, they are in demand, and time is money, so, should they not be able to charge a lot/hour? Demand and supply, people. Its only fair.

and my feelings are not hurt by you putting down my "heros". Im just trying to figure out where others are coming from, because i certainly do not see it their way.

i dunno whether u noticed but i DID say "been visible since 97" ie, he was a small time local dj until then

2 tracks versus......?

and yea so djs maybe hammering tiesto remixes..but they hammer the oakenfold mixes of those same tracks more :stongue:

once again..oakenfold ownz tiesto...so dont put them in the same comparison chart

well u'd have to pay for my ticket cos i wouldnt spend any money on that fellow who has absolutely no creativity when mixing other than teh kill-reset on the lows when crossfading between tracks (yea he only crossfades...ever heard closely??)

meanwhile look at sasha, zabiela and holden....alot of people bash them cos apparenttly they are overrated...pffffft...

these guys would kill any tiesto or tiesto wannabe in a mix

I'm not going to defend everyone who bashes Tiesto/Oakenfold because a lot of them are bandwagoneers, but I'll tell you my take on it:

It's not the fact that they get paid a lot of money that I personally care about. Danny Tenaglia charges an arm and a leg too, and so does Paul van Dyk. My problem with Tiesto and Oakenfold (as of late, and this of course does not apply to 1999-2001) is that they not only charge an arm and a leg but lazily deliver absolute crap for it. ESPECIALLY Tiesto - Oakenfold got way too experimental but not overly lazy, and he has redeemed himself a little lately, but with Tiesto you just get the feeling he doesn't even care about the quality of his sets anymore. After all, why put effort into programming and mixing when you can just throw down last year's cheese, play with the crossfader, and know that everyone will worship you for it anyway?

It's resisting that urge to be lazy that means the difference between an all-star and a "sellout". Obviously every artist who attains this level of popularity must have made enormous contributions to their craft at some point - but some of them lose their way. One can still remember one's roots without relegating themselves to relative obscurity. Selling out has nothing to do directly with the money a DJ (or any other artist) is making for his/her work - it's their attitude toward the work that determines that. As soon as any artist knowingly starts making potboiler, they've lost my respect.

So that's my take on it. I don't believe that I have made such pointed criticism against any other DJs, although there may well be others of lesser stature that are still deserving of it. The legend of Tony de Vit lives on in my mind, working himself to death (or so they say) in order to live up to people's expectations.
