Population of Montreal by Ethnic Origins

Hey guys, what's up...I was doing a bit of research regarding Canadian population distribution along ethnic lines, and I figured I'd check out Montreal in particular, just out of curiosity. So anyway, the last official census made by the government was in 2001, so the numbers reported in Statistics Canada date from then.
The thing that boggles my mind is the fact that the government decided to include, as an ethnic origin, the category Canadian starting in 1996. Since when has Canadian been considered an ethnicity?
In 1991, only 3% reported their ethnicity as Canadian and a further 1% said they were ethnically Canadian and something else (this was a write-in since the box "Canadian" was not available then). In 1996, 29% of people in Montreal reported that their ONLY ethnic origin was Canadian and another 4% reported that their origins were both Canadian and something else. In 2001, 37% of the Montreal population reported that their ONLY ethnic origin was Canadian and another 19% reported that they were ethnically Canadian and something else. Huh?
Anyway, I was hoping to uncover certain trends in the population and report on percentages of certain ethnic groups of interest but it seems that I can't do much with these numbers because of the categories presented. Anyway, make your own conclusions. |

Sim,
Par example, there's no way ya juste 65 000 Arabes a Montreal!

Sim,
Don't forget the fact that over 900 000 people identified themselves as ethnically French, which means that they are probably Quebecers. Like I previously mentioned, from an ethnic perspective, it's usually taken for granted that ethnic groups come from "old continents" such as Europe, Asia and Africa, which is why I was baffled at the inclusion of Canadian, American and even Quebecer in their census. It completely misleads the public into thinking that there are only 44 000 quebecers in montreal, which is obviously ridiculous. A better explanation is as follows: over 900 000 quebecers actually understood what ethnicity meant and identified themeselves with the French ethnicity (there is no way there are actually close to a million French from France people in Montreal). So despair not, Montreal est encore et demeureras une ville Francaise/Quebecoise, with a large ethnic flavour of course :p |
