Google Unveils Video Viewing Software

By MICHAEL LIEDTKE, AP Business Writer Tue Jun 28, 8:33 AM ET

NEW YORK - Google Inc. unveiled a video-viewing channel on its Internet-leading search engine Monday, creating another media outlet that may open new moneymaking opportunities for a company already so profitable its stock has tripled to above $300 in 10 months.

Watching the amateur and professional videos in Google's index requires free software available at [[ LINK REMOVED ]]
The software, consisting of about 1 megabyte, won't do anything except stream Google's videos through the Internet Explorer or Firefox Web browsers.

The limited scope of Google's viewer means it won't be competing — for now at least — with the popular multimedia players made by Microsoft Corp. and RealNetworks Inc.

The Mountain View-based company announced the video viewer just a few hours before its red-hot stock reached a new closing high. Google's shares ended Monday's trading session up $6.85, or 2.3 percent, to $304.10 on the Nasdaq Stock Market.

The stock went public last August at $85 a share.

Yahoo Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO - news), which runs the Internet's second most popular search engine behind Google, also indexes videos that can be streamed through the multimedia players made by other companies, including Microsoft and RealNetworks. Some of Yahoo's videos include programming licensed from major television networks such as CBS and MTV.

Google isn't streaming television content, although its index includes the transcripts and still images from a wide range of shows.

The Google viewer will give Web surfers their first chance to sample the material that the search engine has been stockpiling since April when it initially invited people to submit videos. While all the currently available videos are free, Google hopes to eventually charge for some of material in partnership with the content providers.

Google hasn't set a timetable for introducing the paid videos, said Peter Chane, a senior product manager for the company. Chane wouldn't reveal how many free videos are available through the search engine.

The videos available Monday covered eclectic topics, including breakdancing moves, gardening tips, sarong tying, the 2003 fall of Baghdad and even a guide to advertising on Google.

If it charges for some video, Google could lessen its financial dependence on advertising, which has been a source of concern for some analysts. Online advertising, mostly through text-based links, accounted for virtually all of its $369 million profit during the first quarter.

Google has acknowledged it is working on a new online payment product that many industry observers expect to be linked to paid videos. Company officials have declined to discuss the details of its payment product.

The video viewer also could drive even more advertising to Google, said Forrester Research analyst Charlene Li. She believes Google's new viewing software is designed to build an audience ripe for video advertising.

Neither Google nor Yahoo are currently showing ads next to the videos found through their search engines.

I'm not sure how accurate all of it is, and a lot of it's way over my head, but interesting nonetheless just to see how much development must have gone into this beast...

Google's 2nd-quarter profit quadruples
Web search leader exceeds expectations on strong Internet ad growth

SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc.’s second-quarter profit quadrupled as the online search leader continued to exceed the great expectations underlying its soaring stock, but apparently it still wasn’t good enough for investors demanding even more outlandish growth.

The Mountain View-based company said Thursday that it earned $342.8 million, or $1.19 per share, for the three months ended in June. The results compared with net income of $79.1 million, or 30 cents per share, at the same time last year.

If not for a charge to account for employee stock options issued before Google went public 11 months ago, the earnings would have ranged between $1.29 and $1.35 per share. That topped the mean estimate of $1.21 per share among analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial.

Google countersues Microsoft over engineer

JUL. 22 12:44 A.M. ET Google Inc. countersued Microsoft Corp. Thursday in a legal battle over a prized research engineer that illustrates the escalating tensions between the technology titans.

The tussle began earlier this week after Google -- the maker of the Internet's most widely used search engine -- raided Microsoft's management ranks by hiring Kai Fu-Lee to open a new research and development office in China.

Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft, the world's largest software maker, promptly sued Google and Lee in Washington state court, alleging a noncompete agreement that the engineer signed in 2000 prevented him from defecting.

Google retaliated with its own complaint in California seeking to override Microsoft's noncompete provision so it can retain Lee. In its suit, Mountain View-based Google contends the clause violates California laws giving workers the right to change jobs.

Microsoft's restriction is "clearly an illegal restraint of trade," Nicole Wong, Google's associate general counsel, said in an interview Thursday night. "Google is trying to create an environment for innovators. Microsoft is focused on litigation and intimidation."

Microsoft spokeswoman Stacy Drake McCredy described Google's complaint as a desperate act. "Microsoft is confident in our case and that Google's legal maneuvers will ultimately be rejected by the court," she said.

Google's hiring of Lee triggered a conflict because he had been working on Microsoft's efforts to improve its own search products as a vice president in the software company's interactive services division. He also had been helping Microsoft devise its China strategy.

In its complaint, Google argues California laws should apply because its headquarters -- and most of its nearly 4,200 workers -- are in the state. What's more, Google said Lee already is registered to vote in California, pays taxes in the state and plans to buy a Silicon Valley home.

But Google's initial announcement of Lee's hiring made it sound as if the engineer will be based in China, overseeing the company's new research office there.

"I look forward to returning to China to begin this exciting endeavor," Lee said in a Tuesday statement.

Lee signed his noncompete agreement in Washington, where he worked for Microsoft. Before joining Microsoft, Lee worked at two Silicon Valley companies, Silicon Graphics Inc. and Apple Computer Inc.

"Google is attempting to manufacture California residency for Dr. Lee in a poorly disguised effort to evade Washington law and renege on the agreement Dr. Lee made to Microsoft," Drake McCredy said.

As Google has grown more powerful since its inception in 1998, Microsoft has become increasingly determined to muscle its way into the lucrative search engine market with its own technology. The company unveiled its first internally developed search engine last year on its MSN.com site.

Until this week, Google had been publicly downplaying its rivalry with Microsoft, maintaining that the increased competition in the search engine industry would be good for everyone by fueling more innovation.
