Margaret, you can indeed change the look of the browser. There are many different themes you can choose from. This is one of the main reasons i love firefox, it's not only useful, but "pretty" too :D

You can get the different themes here

Hmmm.. I'd probably go for it too... (especially the bubbles part)

While we're on the subject of FireFox, does anyone know how to quickly switch between tabs - when using tabbed browing - without using the mouse?

FireFox, you hermit... :toocool:

It's the new hype from Mozilla. Better than IE in many ways.

yeah, i don't a a virus, my computer runs very nicely. spyware i get rid of periodically but it's not anything that is bothering me.

the only thing that could pull me towards something else if the interface looks cool and different. like different skins for the borwser. is that possible?

If you didn't already read the "switch" site, then I'll give you three reasons here and now other than security and privacy: tabs, mouse gestures, and quick searches.

Tabs = not having to open up 50,000 windows at a time, and you can also force websites that like to popup new windows to open them as tabs instead, so you only have one browser window open and your taskbar doesn't look like

or even worse:

Instead you have something that's actually pleasant and easy to navigate:

Mouse gestures are an extension and VERY convenient. For example if I have a bunch of tabs open and I want to close the one I'm on, I don't have to move the mouse all the way up to the top of the window and hunt around for the little "X", I can just click anywhere and drag a tiny L shape and the tab closes. If I see a link and want to click it but not lose where I'm at, I can drag it "up" to open it in another tab.

And let's say you come across one of those annoying sites that has all its URLs as plaintext so you can't click on them properly:

http://www.tranceaddict.com (I had to mess with that a bit because tranceaddict automatically tries to resolve links into URLs, but lots of other forums and sites don't)

All of you saps using IE have to highlight it, click in the address box, delete whatever's in there, paste it into the box and press enter or click the "go" button. Anybody using Firefox (or Mozilla) with mouse gestures enabled can just highlight the text and drag it upward a tiny bit and it'll automatically open up in a new tab.

Quick searches are possibly THE MOST USEFUL part of Firefox and a lot of people who use Firefox don't even know about it. I have it set up so, for example, if I want to look up something on dictionary.com, all I have to is type "dic something" DIRECTLY into the URL box and it will automatically look it up. Or if I want to find out information about a CD release, I can type "cddb something" into the box and it will do a lookup right there. You can make this work with pretty much any site at all, except ones that use "post"-type forms.

There are other little things too:
- Instead of having to click "no" to all the "Do you want to install such-and-such" message, they just don't come up at all;
- You can get an ad-blocker for Firefox that not only blocks popups but also gets rid of banners and other annoying screen clutter;
- You can pause/resume your downloads, you can find cool extensions like the one that just got posted here;
- You can right-click on an image and choose "copy image location", which puts the URL on the clipboard and is really handy for things like posting pictures on the forum;
- Notice the "G" box on the firefox picture? I can type something in there to do a google search, in a new tab so I don't lose what I'm doing, but it is NOT the Google toolbar, it has no spyware, and it works with ANY search engine (I keep a list and can choose between them with the arrow next to the G)
- And if you're turned on by pretty colours then you can download TONS of different themes/skins for it;

How's that for a reason? ;)

A little of topic, but maybe still relevant to some:

Can anyone quickly enlighten me about ATOM/RSS feeds ??

I would like to "subscribe" to some blogs, and receive e-mails when a new post has been made in those blogs. Is that possible ?

BTW - how did you get to move your toolbars around in Firefox ? In my version all toolbars seem to be locked and I can't put File Menu, Buttons and Address bar all on the same row :(

Risking the contribution to threadjacking the original topic.. I will mention another favourite extension of mine. I use an extension called "tabrowser extension", which has tons of options to customize the way your tabs in FF work. One of the best options is something called "Single window mode", where everything that would normally open in a new window now only opens in a new tab. Takes back control from all those control freak web designers who only create thier sites in a big annoying fixed-size popup. This plugin, however, is not for the feint of heart.. theres just so many options in it that it's not even funny...

Right-click on the left side of one of the toolbars and go to "customize", then you can change buttons, move them around, etc.

Edit: right side works too, you just have to click really close to the edge.
