so would it be safe to assume then that you feel people who don't display the flag of the country that they presently reside in are showing disrespect to that country .. ? :haha:

NO but to claim a heritage over country of birth does. Especially when for example many italians use "canadian" as an insult. As in, "you canadian kraft dinner eaters". Meanwhile im asking, "where were you born again?"

Otherwise it is your choice what to put in your avatar.

However when flying another country's flag in real life there actually ARE respect protocols that should be followed that many people forget.

quote:
Precedence

The order of precedence for flags is:

1. The National Flag of Canada*
2. The flags of other sovereign nations in alphabetical order (if applicable)**
3. The flags of the provinces of Canada (in the order in which they joined Confederation)
4. The flags of the territories of Canada (in the order in which they joined Confederation)
5. The flags of municipalities/cities
Banners of organizations
6. Her Majesty's Personal Canadian Flag, the standards of members of the Royal Family as well as the standard of the Governor General and the standard of the Lieutenant Governor (in his/her province of jurisdiction and when assuming the duties of the representative of The Queen) take precedence over the National Flag of Canada on the buildings where these dignitaries are in residence or where they are attending a function.
....................................................

With flags of other sovereign nations*

The National Flag of Canada, when flown or paraded, takes precedence over all other national flags. When flown with the flags of other sovereign nations, all flags should be flown on separate flagpoles/masts and at the same height, all being of the same size, with the National Flag of Canada occupying the position of honour.

*The flag configurations shown in figures 11 to 16 also apply when the National Flag of Canada is flown with one or more provincial/territorial flag.

The National Flag should be raised first and lowered last, unless the number of flags permits their being raised and lowered simultaneously.

With the flag of one other nation, the National Flag of Canada should be on the left of the observer facing the flags; both should be at the same height (Figure 11).

Putting a non-native flag on display can simply be a sign of respect and love for one's heritage. Having an Italian flag up is not necessarily the same as claiming to be Italian when you were born in Canada. A lot of families sometimes have friends or relatives over from other countries and put those countries' flags on display as a sign of respect. I was seriously considering sewing a USA and/or Israel flag on the back of my eng. jacket but just never got around to it. :p

It's not the flag that's the problem, it's the cliquey snobbish cultural elitism (from people who are often totally ignorant of the culture they claim to be a part of) which often accompanies it that's the problem. As long as those people are respectful to their REAL home countries, they can put up whatever flag they want.

I have a dutch flag cuz i want a dutch flag.

(and because my dads whole family lives there and hes 2 years away from retirement and im tryin to convince him to retire in the Netherlands. No luck yet, still workin on it. If i have to, I'll resort to having him deported somehow. Then we can go. This would be easier if hed just go willingly, dammit. Ok Im done ranting.)

lol .. oh the travesty, i feel sorry for all those Canadian TA expatriates and foreign workers abroad who have retained their Canadian flags. jayx1, time to go on a global crusade and educate all TAs worldwide who have chosen to retain a flag of their ancestry over their country of birthright. you've got 2 more Canadian forums and a few regional ones to go thru.. best of luck!

long live Micronesia! :toothless

I also have the EU flag as to show that i am from europe and have lived 18 years of my life there. And i rather see myself as a european than a swede. Not because i dont like sweden, i really do love it, but because i love europe and the EU and i support a unified european people ;)
