¿Why do people think their views are so accurate that they need to spread them across the world like a virus? mormons in mayan Guatemala, christians in the pygmie forest of Congo.:whip: They go into culture rich areas and homogonize them to fit their bland opinion of the ideal. Anyone else against missionaries?

I know they do "good" things, but they only do it with the hope of pleasing "god," therefore not soley because they are good people, they think they gain something from it.

I really couldn't care less.

The word of God, and the persuasive manner in which it is often dished out, can often be better responded to in regions where the levels of education and worldly experience is lower.

Religions will put this down to extra help for those that really need it, but the cynical side of my rainbow like personality cannot help but feel that these people are somewhat taken for a ride in the religious bang bus.

My dad is a missionary. All he does is go to Africa and cure people...

Sounds like a great guy, apologies if my rant regarding conversions reflected badly upon this.

Look at it from their point of view, in their mind they are truly bringing the opportunity of salvation to people and they believe strongly enough in it to do it everywhere. Bland is a relative term based on your opinion which you are spreading over this forum. I'm sure the people being converted don't think their new religion is bland, otherwise they wouldn't do it. A particular culture is something that is always on the verge of dissapearing because it is constantly changing, therefore the culture of these people would change regardless of whether missionaries would come in or not.

Well my parents are also missionaries in Europe and they took a lot of crap for it.

Trust me they live in a much less materialistic world then most of you ever will ( with all due respect ) and are much braver. I can remember some quite difficult financial times yet that usually does not stop missionaries.

My father started an organization that would bring medication to Bulgaria from France and it's been going on for over 10 years. One of the things that make me proudest about him. This was a period were the family was getting literally no support and so my dad decided to start this up bringing meds and equipment to a country much in need.

I think you have it all wrong about the idea of them going to the field in hopes of gaining something. It's a genuine life of service dedicated to God whether you believe in that kind of stuff or not.

The thing I dislike about missionaries is that there views are often seen as absolute truth by the people they are with because the amount of things they bring in. By things I mean posessions such as compasses, canteens, but almost always most importantly, medicine. After seeing these people's ability to remove pain and heal, youve got to imagine that these people think that the gods of these missionaries have surely blessed them. Its kind of ironic since science and religion are often at odds.

There are good missionaries and there are bad ones. I don't have a problem with them looking to share their beliefs, but I do have a problem when they lie and tell people that their beliefs are facts when then are really just conjecture.

In either case, I might be inclined to suggest that they're insane. But I have no hatred for the mentally incapable, they're actually quite amusing.
