But the mixing skills:wtf: i couldn't believe what i heard, she screwed like 4 or 5 mixes that heard, mistakes are fine and all, but for god's sake fix em, any beat mix that was out.... stayed out, Nice tunes but the skills sucked IMO, anyone else?????
sorry sezzy |
:conf: :conf: :conf: ahahaha you have no idea what you are talking about, dbass did not screw up a single mix, in terms of both beat mixing and key mixing.and the only time the beats jumped was when someone accidentally KNOCKED the turntable when walking past it.
I was lucky enough to score d'bass' CD latest CD on friday night, and it is absolutely AWESOME, in terms of both key and beats.
Im pretty sure that most DJ's would appreciate it if you get your facts straight before mouthing off about "bad mixes", especially d'bass in this instance. Nothing worse than incorrect assumptions - best keep them to yourself I think.
And I think it was very big of mangler to set the record straight(hehe no pun intended) on this, awesome to see :gsmile: |

..and no offence to you or anyone else but i hope you aren't using the term 'key mixing' loosely...
you do realise that mixing in key does not refer to dropping a track at the beginning of a 32 bar loop.. rather matching it with songs that hold the same key of that record or fit in to the same harmony? ive heard alot of people talk about key mixing and have had no actual idea what it is relative to.
not making any assumptions either.. dbass may very well mix in key, but that would usually mean that she's sat down and labelled all her records one by one to which key they fall under..
regardless, from the demo cd her friend gave me, she can mix quite well and plays some cool tunes! |

hi there!
hehe yes I am familiar with the concepts behind key/harmonic mixing :gsmile:
yeah I mean, I guess there is always some degree of preparation done by a DJ before playing out at a party, even if its just to get a good familiarity with their records, or knowing their records well enough to know which tunes will be in key with each other, for mixing in-to or out-of a given track. To me, knowing your records to that level of "detail" is fairly important, especially in a genre such as trance, where is all euphoric chords, harmonies, etc.
Regarding labelling the records, yeah I know a few DJ's that use that technique, or that have used it in the past, Jeremy K for one. I would never have thought it was a bad thing though? To me, that shows a level of preparation/dedication to the cause, and also allows for greater flexibility "on the fly" so to speak, when playing out.
Personally, I would rather a DJ put in that preparation, if it means I am going to hear a much higher quality set when they are playing out! Nothing beats a super smooth uplifting trance mix where you are still hearing major components from both the track you are mixing out-of, and the track you are mixing in-to next... it sounds awesome!!!
If its a trance tune, mixes that are done exclusively in the bass-beat and percussive zone of the track (of which there is not usually much in modern melodic trance tunes)... whilst this is sometimes necessary, to me, such mixes are lacking in skill, or there is a lack of sufficient familiarity with the tunes being mixed together.
From what I have heard from d'bass, she is not lacking in ANY of these areas... including physically ahahah :gsmile: |

i had to clarify there mate, alot of people seem to think it's a lot less involved than knowing the musical structure of a tune.
no harm meant.
cheers |

oh no harm at all mate :gsmile: 'twas a very good point you raised, and I agree 100%
Personally, I think too many forum-posters sit at their computers, listen to CDs, or to live sets when out, sets which are the product of many years hard work by the DJ at learning the craft of mixing trance... and then they log-in to forum, make bold statements or assumptions without any basis whatsoever, or without any practical knowledge of what they are talking about. "Back seat DJ's", all talk about how to DJ, or how other people DJ, zero actual clue ahahah
I certainly do not include you in that catergory Dave, just found it to be an interesting discussion to have :gsmile: |

nothings wrong with labelling your records..
If the TA's knew that Armin himself labels his records with coloured stickers according to their corresponding key, I'm sure there'd be alot less critism regarding the mixing standards of d'bass.
Unfortunatly this forum is full of YESMANS and sheep who follow the popular persons opinion. I'm one of the sheep who follow the ponies, but that is purely for other sensory pleasures. |

Thats an interesting point, but people like what they like. They'll listen to CD's and stuff and say "Yeh, that sounds good", or "what a crap CD".
Same with DJ's. People will hear a set and say 'Yeh that was good', or they'll bag it because they didnt like it. I don't go out to see how technically proficient a DJ is, I go out to hear some decent tunes.
I do agree that sometimes people can try to make unjust claims due to a lack of knowledge or experience, but just because someone doesn't like something doesn't mean they don't have a clue, it just means it didn't suit their tastes! |

Personally, i cant mix to save my life, i cant basic beat match, i cant tell whether a track is infront or behind another one and i definatelly cant key mix or powermix for that matter.
I think, that for you to say that many forum posters make "bold statements" whilst sitting at our computers, about mixing, without any practical knowledge is a "bold statement" itself. Whilst i agree that alot of TA's do tend to follow whats popular...i think alot of the trance community is quite well educated without having even touched a pair of dex.
Alot of people on this forum do mix and do it well. And alot of people dont mix and still understand the whole concept of mixing without any/much practical knowledge. I, and may others, dont DJ at all, but when i listen to a DJ i can tell when a mix is out...does that make me a "backseat dj" or an "educated listener" or is it just knowing what you like? :)
Mind you i didnt get to hear ANY of Dbass's set on friday..:( can someone please pass me a cd??
You have excellent knowledge and i dont doubt that you can mix quite well!
Anyway, welcome newbiee. Hope you enjoy your stay..No hard feelings :)!! |
