if you install just barebones winamp5, then it should really be the same as winamp 2.9x.... i've never had problems with it...

WINAMP is the !

The founders left because they wanted to see Winamp remain a relatively open source/free type of product and AOL has plans to bundle the player into content offerings, etc.

----

Just because the founders of a company quit, get fired, die or otherwise depart does not mean the end of a product.

Winamp will come back - as it is a viable product in a high-growth medium - the challenge was simply monitizing it in it's current form.

No need to cry over spilt milk. It's funny how fat-cat VC money stuffed founders sometimes delude themselves into thinking what they're doing is some just moral cause - when really, it's just business (make or buy, sell at a profit).

PS - I use 5.05 Pro to run 2HP.ca Radio.

Winamp 5 is almost as good as 2.9x...One thing i noticed was if one is using the Media library feature and has tons of the mp3s and/or multiple partitions where the media resides...it somehow reindexes the whole library again while the launch therefore making the startup slow...but once its up and running it rarely crashes

It was more of a meeting than a story or article.

You want to talk about footprints of applications, try Winamp 5 with a Skin on it and then Winamp2 with a skin (ok, so the skins are more complex in 5, I'm not overly interested in how fancy they can make it at the expensive of speed). It was sluggish to load compared to 2.95.

9.1 MB address space (about 4 MB used), 11 threads, 221 handles, average around 15% CPU usage while playing, using "modern" skin with visualizations turned on.

Okay, it's a little more than Winamp 2.x, but it's fair considering the difference in hardware between now and 3 years ago. Winamp 3 blew ass but they fixed a lot of the problems in Winamp 5. It's not like the difference between, say, 5-10 megs in IE3 and 150 in IE6. :wtf:

Plus you can turn a lot of off if you want to minimize resource usage. I dunno, I kept my old Winamp 2 install file just in case but I haven't felt the urge to use it since they released version 5.
