CPU usage depends on the CPU and the hardware configuration, it's not going to be the same from one computer to the next like memory usage is. Properly threaded programs go idle when there's nothing to do; so if Winamp takes a few thousand cycles to send the next few seconds of music to a hardware buffer, the actual CPU usage % depends pretty much solely on how many CPU cycles are actually available during those next few seconds (i.e. your clock speed). On both computers, the program has executed the same number of instructions, it's just a lower % of overall time on the faster one.
I'm running an aging Athlon XP1700+ (1.4 GHz), so I'd imagine that new computers probably only show about 5% CPU usage at the most from Winamp5. |

As I said, it's not just the CPU, it's also parts like the sound card, video card, etc. - sometimes certain processing can be delegated to those devices; if not, the CPU has to take care of it and requires more cycles.
It might even be your software config though - if you find Winamp is using a lot of CPU time you should try playing with the Wave/DirectSound plugin settings, like changing the buffer sizes.
Lots of programs out there seem to be resource hogs but allow you to change that in the configurations. It's all about RTFM. ;) |

Just because the founders of a company quit, get fired, die or otherwise depart does not mean the end of a product.
Winamp will come back - as it is a viable product in a high-growth medium - the challenge was simply monitizing it in it's current form.
No need to cry over spilt milk. It's funny how fat-cat VC money stuffed founders sometimes delude themselves into thinking what they're doing is some just moral cause - when really, it's just business (make or buy, sell at a profit). |
