Since today is Remembrance Day i was wondering how many of us are actually related to someone who fought in either of the world wars.
My great-grandfather fought in the 1st world war and died shortly after armistice from the injuries sustained to his lungs from a mustard gas attack.
My grandfather was part of the Belgian Resistance in the second World War and was one of the men who helped the Americans open the gates of the concentration camps.
What were your relatives' role(s) during the war? |

it's amazing how you hear stories about WWII and how so many men tried to enlist despite age limits or physical handicaps..
today, we just don't have the same gung-ho to enlist.. I think WWII was the last Great War where there were 2 definitive sides of GOOD and BAD. Axis vs Allies.
Today there's people for the war in Iraq and people against it.. but we dont have the unifying mentality to all go over and secure freedom and peace. |

My grandfather on the mothers line was the head engineer/director of an ammo factory during WW2. He oversaw all the kids and women making artillery shells for the soldiers.
And my grandfather on my father's side was in the cavalry, but then after it turned out to be obsolete, a minigunner. I don't remember if he ever made it to Berlin but he does have a medal for liberation of Warsaw for sure. |

Also, even though this is somewhat unrelated to the topic, its a cool story:
Back in the Russian/Turkish war this russian soldier was in Turkey fighting right? One day he went to the slave market there and bought a Greek woman. He brought her back to Ukraine, married her and had a son. And the son of the soldier and the greek slave was the grandfather of MY grandfather. Pretty cool huh?:tongue2
And no, I am not lying this is what happened. |
