Either my computer is slow tonight or Spacey Orange's sig is way too big because it took about 3 minutes for it to load.
Why are the French gay anyway? |

Well I dare say I know too much on the topic other than that France has historically had interests in northern Africa, i.e. Algeria and perhaps Tunisia or Morocco or something. Ivory coast sounds like an ex-colony, blah blah blah.
In any event, I dare say those nasty French are acting unilaterally here!
From the article...
| quote: | | Nationalist politicians routinely say their country is being re-colonised by Paris. The parliamentary speaker recently told French radio Ivorian resistance will turn the country into France's "Vietnam". |
Wait...France already had a Vietnam!
| quote: | | French companies also remain deeply involved in the economy of what remains a regional giant and major cocoa producer. |
Hmmmm....
A little more perspective from Wikipedia...
| quote: | In the 19th century, Côte d'Ivoire was seized by Louis Gustave Binger, (1856-1936) as a colony for France. It became independent in 1960 and was ruled by Félix Houphouët-Boigny and his party PDCI until 1993.
The government of Henri Konan Bédié was replaced in 1999 by a military coup d'état of Robert Guéï. After ten months in which Côte d'Ivoire experienced an economic downturn, failed elections, and public protest, it eventually returned to democratic rule in 2000 under Laurent Gbagbo.
In 2002 a rebellion in the North and the West came up and the country is now divided in three parts. A reconciliation process under international auspices started in 2003. Several thousand French and West African troops remain in Côte d'Ivoire to maintain peace and help implement the peace accords. |
And no wonder France doesn't want to leave!
| quote: | | Maintaining close ties to France since independence in 1960, diversification of agriculture for export, and encouragement of foreign investment has made Côte d'Ivoire one of the most prosperous of the tropical African states. |

Then again, I really don't know much about the situation. |

That is absolute nonsense. Do you not remember the Balkans? The Tianamen Massacre? East Timor? The Chinese annexation of Tibet? Apartheid? Rwanda? |

| I think the primary reason why noone really cares is because it's happening in Africa. It's the most backwards and desolate part of the world where local tribes keep fighting each other and there's not much anyone can do. If France intervened in a country like Iraq, it would be all over the news. |

With all due respect, what the hell does that mean and why are these events not sigificant? Because they occurred about 10 years ago? Are global-politcal events that occured about 10 years ago irrelevent? This is very short-sighted historical view of the world.
I stand by my earlier comment.

You are justified in how you feel, however I think in Izzy’s and Drug_Tito’s defense they are merely referring to the world coverage in general, especially during these times where the U.S. is more or less the central focus of all foreign relations press coverage, good or bad (mostly the latter, esp. with war). Call it a short term memory of world press, call it the overriding current events of the Superpower, whatever, unfortunately it’s seemingly the case. |
